Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 1993

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

The 205 GTI had everything when new – sharp handling, light weight for added chuckability, and an unburstable engine that sings the more you rev it.

Ever since the first 1.6-litre 205 GTI went on sale in April 1984, the eulogies to the car have appeared thick and fast. With 105hp on tap from its all-alloy 1580cc four-pot, superb handling, and reasonable build quality, the 205 GTI soon became a favourite with the motoring press and car buyers alike. Sometimes owners got a bit carried away and overcooked it on the bends, sometimes those who pranged the car had ‘borrowed' it without asking, but everyone who drove it reckoned the little Pug was one of the best drives available, at any money.

In 1985 Peugeot's barking mad 205 T16 rally car won the World Rally Championship, and in 1986 the convertible 205 GTI went on sale, neatly badged the CTI. Peugeot were on the crest of a wave with their small hatch.

Things got even more fun – and more easily out of shape – when the 1.9-litre car arrived in January 1987 with 130hp and disc brakes all round. So that it wasn't overshadowed by its bigger brother, tweaks to the cylinder head and camshaft in 1987 meant power for the 1.6-litre car rose to 115hp.

Exterior

This low mileage 1.9 presents in really nice original condition. Looking along both sides it’s very straight and the panel gaps are consistent. The car has never been fully restored and while not a concours example it still looks fantastic. Being extremely picky there are a handful of minor paint defects to note on very close inspection, one or two small dings, and quite typically of the model some cosmetic stress cracks are visible in the usual places. All the plastic trims have recently been treated and so present with a lovely uniform finish free from any fading or damage. The lights are immaculate, the glass is all-original, and having clearly been garaged for most of its life all the rubber seals still feel supple. The car is also excellent underneath; following an inspection by our trusted classic car workshop the technicians were pleased to report that the underside remains in particularly sound condition. The 15-inch wheels have recently been refurbished and so present perfectly.

Interior

The interior also appears in first-rate condition with none of the normal fading to the carpets or upholstery. The seat bolsters have not sagged and the leather remains in brilliant original condition. The steering wheel has been professionally re-trimmed to a high standard and not only looks the part but also feels great in-hand. There are no cracks or areas of sun damage to any of the dash or black plastic trims, the door cards are perfect, and the original vacuum sunroof operates exactly as it should with no leaks. A couple of nice upgrades over standard include a Kenwood CD player and a complete set of tailored overmats in red. 

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The venerable 1.9-litre engine bursts into life first turn of the key and pulls through the rev range eagerly. We have sold lots of these over the years and all agree this is one of the best driving examples we’ve had the pleasure of selling. Following on from a few years in storage the car was extensively re-commissioned only 600 miles ago and, for the new keeper’s peace of mind, we have just had it inspected to ensure everything still remains in tip-top shape. Some of the re-commissioning items include:
• Carry out full service• Replace timing belt, water pump and auxiliary belt• Replace distributor cap and rotor arm• Replace rear main oil seal and rear main cap seals• Replace clutch and flywheel bolts• Replace diff oil seals and oil temperature sensor• Replace valve stem oil seals, rocker gasket, and cam oil seal• Replace intake pipe, breather pipe, and vacuum hose• Replace thermostat and refill coolant• Replace brake discs and pads all round• Replace front brake hoses and carry out fluid change• Replace offside front CV gaiter• Replace lower and nearside engine mounts• Replace front washer pump• Replace heater blower motor• Overhaul air flow meter• Carry out MOT (expires June 2024)

History File

This cracking little 205 GTI was first registered in March 1993. Supplied new by Peugeot in Coventry it has now driven just 88,828 miles. The accompanying paperwork is complete with the original Peugeot document wallet and handbooks, two service books with 21 stamps, a thick raft of invoices dating back to the mid-nineties, lots of MOT certificates, a spare key, the V5C showing 9 former keepers, and some nice original 205 sales brochures. Under current ownership the car has been treated to a full mechanical re-commissioning carried out only 600 miles ago. Freshly inspected at the current mileage she’s more than ready to hit the new owner's favourite country roads.
