For sale in our St. Louis showroom is a 3 owner 1939 Plymouth Business Coupe. The Business Coupe was designed for a business man, which is why it is also referred to a Business Man’s Coupe. There was no back seat, which provided plenty of trunk space for a traveling salesman. Powering this 39’ Plymouth is a Flathead 6 cylinder engine that is mated to a 3 speed manual transmission. The engine and transmission were both rebuilt about 10 years ago, and are believed to be original to the car. The car was repainted during the complete restoration 10 years ago, and the black exterior paint shows very well. The tan interior also shows very well, as it shows minimal signs of wear and tear. The odometer reads 80,166, which is believed to be the actual mileage on the car. Options for this 1939 Plymouth Business Coupe include: Cloth Interior, Wide White Wall Bias Ply Tires, and Hub Caps. The 1939 Plymouth models received a complete redesign. The biggest change was the for the first time the headlights and taillights were mounted in the body as opposed to on it. The frames were heavier, and featured a 6 foot X brace or cross member. To avoid vapor lock, the fuel bowl was moved further away from the exhaust manifold, reducing the heat near the bowl. Prices for a Plymouth actually dropped in 1939, they average $5 to $10 less per car than the 1938 models. Just under 420,000 Plymouths rolled off the line in 1939 model year. This was a 17% increase from the year before, also the 3 millionth Plymouth was produced in 1939.
