Plymouth Satellite 426 cubic inch HEMI V8 1969

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Is the Plymouth HEMI GTX the ultimate muscle car? Style, performance, comfort, it’s the total package with a legendary powerplant under the hood. More than just a dressed-up Road Runner, the GTX was aimed at a totally different customer—that customer is someone who wanted some substance to go with the sledgehammer performance of the Hemi engine. That meant an upscale interior, better sound deadening, and the gorgeous GTX look that includes unique emblems, trim, and detailing that make these cars stand apart. If you wanted to go fast but didn’t feel like driving something from the bargain bin, the GTX was the right choice.

This stunning 1969 Plymouth GTX features a cost-no-object rotisserie restoration to an exceptionally high standard. Experts will have already checked the fender tag to see its pedigree, and you’ll be pleased to note this is a real-deal Super Track Pack car that was originally delivered with a 4-speed and a thumping 440 cubic inch mill under the hood. In fact, that fender tag also reveals a pretty long list of options:

When you find a car like that, you grab it and make it right. Over the next several years, the car was stripped to bare metal and rebuilt from there. Expert bodywork ensures that the B-body sheetmetal is laser-straight, including that crease on the rear quarters that’s almost sharp enough to give you a paper cut. Gaps are excellent throughout, probably better than new, and thanks to two-stage urethane paint, the stunning paint job glows in the sunlight. They also added the correct V21 Performance hood treatment along with functional cold air induction and chrome HEMI badges. The vinyl top was replaced and obviously there are no issues underneath, and the matching satin black rocker panels with that red pinstripe are a big part of why the GTX is special. It looks nasty but it’s just beautifully dressed. Fresh chrome on the bumpers, polished stainless trim, and a fresh $4000 trunk insert (perhaps the last NOS piece on the planet) help with the well-dressed look. Other neat details include dual mirrors, L31 fender-mounted turn signals, and correct exhaust tips under the rear bumper. It’s just gorgeous!

Inside it received an all-new P6X black bucket seat interior from Legendary and literally everything you can touch is new. Seat covers, carpets, headliner, door panels, dash pad, all fresh replacements in as-new condition. All the wood appliques are bright and crisp and the woodgrained steering wheel helps with the upscale feel of the GTX. A full set of factory gauges include a factory tach, which parks itself at random places when you shut off the engine due to the electronic ignition, and there are auxiliary gauges under the dash for temperature and oil pressure. A Hurst shifter with cue ball knob is a period-correct accessory that makes this car a joy to row through the gears. You’ll also note that all the interior courtesy lights are fully functional, the seat belts have been re-webbed, and the factory AM radio works as it should. That red knob under the dash manages the Air Grabber hood, and it makes a difference, if only in the spectacular soundtrack of the HEMI V8. The trunk is also correctly detailed with a reproduction mat and spare tire assembly, and just check out those floors—they’ve been color sanded just like the rest of the body!

This GTX was acquired as a roller, so the original powerplant was long gone (is that really a surprise in a Super Track Pack car with 4.10 gears?). Making the best of the situation, they took that opportunity to upgrade the hardware inside. That’s a fresh 426 cubic inch HEMI V8 which was, in fact, one of the development engines for Mopar Performance’s all-new crate motors, so it’s a fantastic runner with a few tricks directly from the guys who know these engines best. It is highly detailed for a factory-correct look, from the giant orange air cleaner to the correct black wrinkle-finish valve covers to the Hemi Orange paint on the block. Little stuff like the markings, the hose clamps, the mounting hardware, and even the battery are all accurately restored. Power steering and brakes make this heavy cruiser easy to manage and the beautifully tuned HEMI is surprisingly docile for street use. Yeah, it’s got the right sound, but it starts easily, idles nicely hot or cold, and doesn’t have any bad habits—that’s harder to achieve than you think with these cars. It’s exactly what you’d expect from an upscale muscle car like the GTX. Just get in and go stomp some Mustangs!

The chassis is shockingly well detailed, far beyond anything the factory was doing in 1969. The underbody was treated to the same paint, color sand, and polish job as the rest of the bodywork, so all the hardware really sparkles. Those ceramic-coated long-tube headers are a work of art! There’s also a fully rebuilt and detailed front suspension with disc brakes, a correct A833 4-speed manual transmission, and a bulletproof Dana 60 rear end out back, part of the Super Track Pack. 4.11 gears on a Sure Grip were standard with the Track Pack, too, but during the restoration 3.54 gears were installed to make this one a bit friendlier for today’s world. It’s still bloody fast, but you won’t be incinerating the tires every time you use more than half throttle. You’ll also note that all the lines and hoses are new, the gas tank is new, and the exhaust system is a slightly upgraded version of the original, so it sounds right but flows a bit better. There’s actually no evidence underneath that this car was ever abused, despite the Super Track Pack equipment, because the spring perches and torque boxes are in excellent condition. From a sheetmetal perspective, the floors are exceptional, the trunk extensions are unmarked, and the rocker panel seams are arrow-straight. It’s easy to see how six-figures’ worth of restoration work paid off. It sits on fresh Magnum 500 wheels with new 235/70/15 BFGoodrich redline radials that are the best possible choice for a GTX like this.

See what I mean about the GTX being the ultimate muscle car? This car stops traffic on the road and attracts crowds at the shows simply because everyone remembers these as the king of the streets. Add in the spectacular over-the-top restoration and you have a car that is among the very finest we’ve ever featured. The color is right, the engine is heroic, and it drives as great as it looks which doesn’t always happen with cars this nice; this is no mere trailer queen. If you love the GTX like we do, this exceptional hardtop will delight you every time you turn the key. Call today!
