Pontiac Firebird 6.6 Liter V8 1979

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Limited production classics commemorating significant milestones are pretty much a no brainer when it comes to collectability. Add that status to the already desirable second generation Trans Am, and you've definitely got something special! The late 1970s could be considered an age of enlightenment for pony car enthusiasts, as many realized amazing rides like this 30-mile 10th Anniversary Trans Am would be valuable assets if correctly stewarded. One of the last 1,817 cars fitted with Pontiac's top-option W72/4-speed combo, this fully documented coupe is a largely-original show queen that's fit for a museum. Looking for a fun place to park your money? Look no further than this handsome F-Body!
FLY THE COLORS!
Beginning life at GM's Norwood manufacturing facility, and meeting its first owner at Pell Pontiac in Westboro, Massachusetts, this terrific Trans Am is a virtually untouched time capsule! As you would expect, the car's straight body remains solid, looking decidedly handsome under 10th Anniversary Platinum Metallic paint and a fiery array of resplendent decals. And today, this rarity rolls as a super clean classic that would be equally at home on the green of a high-end show or in the company of a world class collection.
Not as 'loud' as the Gold Special Edition Trans Am, and not quite as menacing as the Black Special Edition Trans Am, this silver 10th Anniversary car combines typical Pontiac attitude with a refined look that was way ahead of its time. Up front, pliable urethane centers black-trimmed headlights above dual grilles that, while still instantly identifiable as Pontiac, give the car a much more aggressive face. Behind that bumper, a traditional Shaker Hood proudly displays 'T/A 6.6', denoting the car's rare and optional W72 Pontiac engine. Behind that hood, anniversary car-exclusive T-tops shade Soft Ray glass, color-keyed mirrors and chrome door handles. Beneath those handles, familiar wheel spoilers frame requisite air extractors. And at the back of the car, a contoured deck spoiler caps blacked out taillights and polished side-splitter exhaust tips.
W72
Pop the hood and you'll find an original Pontiac W72 V8 that, like all 1979 W72s, was exclusive stock from Pontiac's 1978 discontinuation of the engine. Thanks to government mandated emissions standards, performance had almost been legislated out of existence. That left the Trans Am suffering a bit of an identity crisis. This 'bird's 'PWH' branded V8 combined the largest muscle car engine you could buy with Pontiac's proven '6X' head design to create one of the fastest pony cars on the market. At the top of the mill, a big 4-barrel carburetor rides under a familiar Trans Am shaker. Below that carb, bright GM Corporate Blue is a result of excellent care taking. Around that glow, a clean bay is covered in a smooth coat of GM Satin Black. All the hard parts around the motor, from the vintage brake booster to the Delco Air climate control, appear to be factory-spec. And naturally, the engine wears a correct 481988 casting number behind a matching 166275 partial VIN.
AWESOME AND AUTHENTIC
Beneath this Trans Am, a clean undercarriage frames a roster of original components. Behind the engine, an original Borg Warner T10 4-speed hangs a correct 1304065903 casting number beneath a February 5th, 1979 assembly date and a matching 166275 partial VIN. That trusted transmission funnels torque through an original 10-bolt axle that's finished with a correct 'PP' assembly stamp. That drivetrain rides a tagged WS6 suspension, which aligns larger sway bars, better shocks and better springs with tighter steering and power-assisted discs. The car's solid, original floors are traced by clean, original exhaust. And power meets the pavement through machined wheels, which twist 225/70R15 Goodyear Polysteel Radials around red bird center caps.
SILVER = SUCCESS
Inside this Trans Am, an original, 10th Anniversary-exclusive interior looks fantastic and, in our opinion, rivals the Ivory laden Chevelles of the late '60s and early '70s as one of GM's best efforts. Firm and comfortable seats are nice metallic pieces that have the liquid-cool appearance of wet paint, and Cadillac-supplied shag carpet looks great. Between those seats, a clean console plants chrome power window switches behind a chrome Hurst shifter. At the front of the car, an engine-turned instrument panel frames crystal clear gauges above factory climate control and correct, Cadillac-sourced audio. And in front of the driver, an attractive Formula Steering Wheel tops an optional, tilting column.

Position in GM -Hierarchie:
