The 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom is a pretty big deal. It was the final step into Pontiacs transition into both premium and performance. So when you can get your hands on a very correct hardtop sedan with true V8 power, then you know this is quite an attractive offering.
The Pontiac division was heating up during this era, and this car is a big reason why. It had an instant presence on the streets when it arrived in '57, and that has only grown in the last seven decades. But today that admiration is all about how complete this car looks. It's a factory-correct two-tone Fontaine Blue and Ivory that received some extra attention a few years back. Plus, the brightwork is key to a cool '50s classic, and this has a ton of it. The long grille that integrates into the wraparound bumper, factory wheel covers, classic badging, and big rear bumper with integrated exhaust – it's all part of an impressive total presentation. But our favorite part is the side trim. You could get the same cool pillarless hardtop sedan profile at Chevrolet, but a fully loaded Bel Air still wouldn't come close to this premium Pontiac's price. And the cost distinction back then keeps an example like this a true rarity today.
These cars were given quite a unique interior, and so it's great to see one preserved all these years later. This high degree of originality heightens the appeal of the two-tone presentation that's on the door panels, dash, and the distinct asymmetrical seat pattern. There's plenty of room for family and friends. In fact, you'll love going place with them just so you can watch people admire all four doors open at once without a single pillar in the way. But the real joy is the nostalgia this one brings. The steering wheel and dashboard setup is as ornate as the exterior trim, and you have everything from the correct heat/defrost controls to the correct AM radio that's still on display.
What really makes this such a great cruiser is under the hood. This was the first generation of the new V8 motor built by Pontiac for Pontiac. Enlarged to 347 cubic-inches for '57, this freshly painted blue block radiates power from within the smooth, dark engine bay. And this powerful impression is backed up by a four-barrel carburetor that feeds the sweet-sounding dual exhaust. Add in a Hydramatic automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes, and you've got a great cruising classic.
