Porsche 911 / 993 Carrera S 1997

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History
993 was Porsche’s internal name for 911s manufactured and sold between late 1993 and early 1998, replacing the 964. Its discontinuation marked the end of air-cooled Porsches. The external design of the Porsche 993, penned by Englishman Toni Hatter, retained the basic bodyshell architecture of the 964 but with changed external panels; much more flared wheel arches and a smoother front and rear bumper design, an enlarged retractable rear wing, and teardrop door mirrors.

A major technical change was the implementation of an all-alloy multi-link rear suspension attached to an alloy sub frame, the first major mechanical change since the original 911. It required the widening of the rear wheel arches, which itself helped the 993's stability. This suspension improved the handling, making it more direct and stable, helping to reduce the tendency to oversteer if the throttle was lifted during hard cornering. It also reduced interior noise and improved ride quality.

The 993 was also the first generation of 911 to have as standard a six-speed manual gearbox; previous models (apart from the Porsche 959) had four or five-speed gearboxes. In virtually every situation it was possible to keep the engine in its best torque range above 4,500rpm.

The Carrera S shared the Turbo model's bodyshell but housed the naturally aspirated Carrera engine in the rear. The S models had slightly lowered suspension compared to standard Carrera models. They were equipped with the naturally aspirated 3.6-litre M64 engine, further developed from the 964, and combined with a new dual-flow exhaust system now incorporating two catalytic converters. In contrast with the 964, Porsche deleted the ‘2’ from the rear-wheel drive ‘Carrera’ name tag.

Of the 3,714 Carrera S coupes built, it is understood that only 251 cars were produced in right-hand drive with the desirable manual gearbox, making the example featured here a very rare beast indeed.

Exterior

This rare and desirable UK-supplied Carrara S has a mere 24k miles on the clock, and as you would expect the bodywork is in exceptionally good condition. All of the paintwork appears to be original and despite this there are very few stone chips other than a couple on the lower part of the front bumper; the rear arch protection film has done its job well and so the rear arches are pleasingly free from the usual road rash. The front lights are also free from chips and the rears are in good condition too other than a slight crack on the central reflector. The car is 100% accident-free with no signs of any damage or previous poor repairs. This 993 has lived a cosseted indoor life and as such none of the plastic trims or rubber seals have faded or cracked.

Interior

The reddish Chestnut leather makes for a fantastic combination with the silver paintwork. The condition of the interior backs up the low mileage, showing only minimal wear to the driver’s bolster with none of the usual scratches on the centre console, door cards, or dashboard. The steering wheel, gear knob, handbrake, and pedals almost look new, as do the rear seats and front trunk compartment.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Opening the rear lid is a treat for any 911 enthusiast; the engine bay appears like new with all of the original Porsche engine lacquer still present. Despite its low mileage the car has always been kept exercised with regular services and oil changes carried out as required. If the new owner desires to put the car into regular use we would expect some light recommissioning work to make the it 100% perfect for the road.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Each of the alloys are in perfect condition with no scuffs, lacquer peel, or curb marks; they are shod in a matching set of premium Continental tyres, all of which have plenty of life left.

History File

The current owner has owned the car for approximately ten years and he purchased it from a Porsche main dealer as he was looking for the nicest C2S available at the time. The History File includes the original document pack and service book.
