Porsche 911 / 993 Targa 1996

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History
993 was Porsche’s internal name for 911s manufactured and sold between late 1993 and early 1998, replacing the 964. Its discontinuation marked the end of air-cooled Porsches. The external design of the Porsche 993, penned by Englishman Toni Hatter, retained the basic bodyshell architecture of the 964 but with changed external panels; much more flared wheel arches and a smoother front and rear bumper design, an enlarged retractable rear wing, and teardrop door mirrors. In contrast with the 964, Porsche deleted the ‘2’ from the rear-wheel drive ‘Carrera’ name tag.

A major technical change was the implementation of an all alloy multi-link rear suspension attached to an alloy sub frame, the first major mechanical change since the original 911. It required the widening of the rear wheel arches, which itself helped the 993's stability. This suspension improved the handling, making it more direct and stable, helping to reduce the tendency to oversteer if the throttle was lifted during hard cornering. It also reduced interior noise and improved ride quality.

The 993 was also the first generation of 911 to have as standard a six-speed manual gearbox; previous models (apart from the Porsche 959) had four or five-speed gearboxes. In virtually every situation it was possible to keep the engine in its best torque range above 4,500rpm.

Equipment

Arctic Silver Metallic paintwork, Marble Grey leather upholstery, 6-Speed manual transmission, Electrically-operated Targa glass roof, Air conditioning, Electric windows, Electric mirrors, Analogue clock, Electrically adjustable front seats, Retractable rear wing, Rear window wiper, Remote central locking, Space saver spare wheel, Tool kit, Spare keys.

Exterior

The lustrous Arctic Silver paintwork appears in fantastic condition under our studio lighting, displaying a sharp metallic flake and deep shine to every panel. Having driven only 54k miles from new the car is really well presented throughout, additionally boasting Amourfend paint protection film (PPF) to the front bumper, bonnet, and wings. It's lovely and straight along both sides, and the lights are perfectly clear all round with no signs of any moisture ingress or damage. In late 2017 the car was treated to a sympathetic cosmetic refresh costing in excess of £13k. The result is what you see here, a very sharp example of the air-cooled 911's final iteration, looking every bit the low mileage.

Interior

The sumptuous cabin is trimmed in supple Marble Grey leather with complementing deep pile carpets. The seats remain in excellent condition and are still perfectly supportive, with all the electronic adjustments operating just as they should. Looking closer, commonly worn areas such as the driver's bolster and gear knob show signs of only light use, and the steering wheel is free from any unsightly marks. The switchgear is pristine and still reassuringly solid to operate, with great features such as the electric glass roof and air conditioning in perfect working order. A wonderfully clean and highly original interior overall, the only upgrade over standard being an Alpine CD player.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

As to be expected the engine bay is in immaculate condition with no damage to any of the components and no unsightly corrosion to be found. The 3.6-litre flat-six looks as good as new and fires up first turn of key. Being a later 993 this one is equipped with Porsche’s Varioram induction system giving vastly improved low to mid-range torque over pre-1996 examples.

In 2010 at 39k miles a new engine was fitted by Porsche Centre Reading, the invoice for this work alone totalling an eye-watering £18,620. The car has always been well maintained and the service booklet is stamped only by Porsche and Porsche specialist workshops. For the new keeper’s peace of mind a fresh service has just been carried out at the current mileage of 54,521 miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on stunning 17-inch split-rim alloys, all in perfect unmarked condition having previously been refurbished to the highest standard with new nuts and bolts all round. They are shod in a matching set of premium Michelin Pilot Sport tyres with plenty of tread remaining at each corner. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition; new pads and discs were fitted all round at circa 48k miles. 4-wheel alignment was carried out shortly after, and the brake fluid was last changed in February 2021.

History File

This fantastic UK RHD (C16) 993 Targa was first registered in October 1996. It was supplied new by Lancaster Bow Porsche in London and has now driven just 54k miles in the hands of 8 registered keepers. The accompanying History File is complete with the original maintenance booklet featuring 12 stamps, a raft of Porsche/specialist invoices, and every MOT certificate since 1999 further verifying the car's very low mileage.

A brand new engine was fitted by Porsche in 2010 at a cost of £18,620 (as per the included invoice). The work was done by Porsche Centre Reading at 39k miles, meaning the current engine has now covered only 15k miles. The car has continued to be well maintained ever since, with 6 subsequent services having been carried out, the last at 54k miles in January 2023. Other notable works include a cosmetic refresh by Neinmeister Porsche Specialists in September 2017, costing £13,380.
