Off-roaders know the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser is hard to beat in the rough stuff, but true FJ fans will definitely want to take this one home. Imported from Australia where it was a troop transporter, it was comprehensively outfitted to tackle, well, just about anything. Diesel power, off-road hardware, and a surprisingly comfortable interior all make this the ultimate adventure vehicle.
If you've been paying attention at all over the past four or five years, you know that the Toyota Land Cruisers are red hot with collectors. However, this incredible machine takes it just a few steps beyond the usual 4x4, and the unusual body style is bound to attract loads of attention everywhere it goes. Geared for just about anything and restored by a buy who was planning a big adventure and sadly was never able to enjoy it, few vehicles can compete with this Toyota for sheer presence. The white paint is familiar and the flat sides of the body are straight, smooth, in a way that they never were when climbing through the jungle. A heavy-duty roof rack offers additional lighting and a pop-up tent, with a secondary rack on the back for the oversized spare, jack assembly, and a trio of jerrycans. Up front, a heavy-duty winch with remote provides leverage for tough situations and a snorkel assembly allows it to ford water up to three feet deep. If you can't get there in this truck, you probably shouldn't go.
The interior is basic, yes, but it's very nicely finished and quite accurately done. The right-hand-drive setup is legal here in the US, so no worries there, and you'll find it's rather easy to get familiar with it after just a few minutes of driving. The seats all wear recent cloth upholstery that should look this good for years to come due to their rugged build quality. The floors were covered in spray-on bedliner so you can just hose it out when you're done playing and the vast cargo area in back still offers seating for 10 or 12 of your closest friends. A custom billet aluminum instrument panel houses modern Auto Meter instruments to keep an eye on the upgraded mechanicals and there's a custom overhead console, a CB radio, extra fans, and auxiliary lighting.
The engine is a 4.0 liter inline-six turbo diesel that should run practically forever on whatever diesel fuel they're serving in the remote corners of the world. Thanks to a correct Garrett turbocharger that really wakes up the engine, it's torquey enough to move the big truck without a lot of effort. Smart gearing in the 4-speed manual transmission, transfer case, and axles give it the ability to cruise at highway speeds and still crawl along at barely a walking pace when the terrain gets rough. The fuel injectors were rebuilt and twin Optima batteries fire it up. The axles are fitted with 4.11 gears and ARB air-locker differentials, so you can have full traction on the fly and EMU Dakar springs give it a modest lift for improved ground clearance. New 16x8 aluminum wheels were powdercoated black and are now fitted with big 285/75/16 7-ply Toyo off-road tires.
