Model History
In late 1967, the second generation of the VW Type 2 was introduced. They were built in Germany until 1979, while in Mexico, the VW Kombi and Panel were produced from 1970 to 1994. Models before 1971 are often called the T2a or “Early Bay”, while models after 1972 are known as the T2b or “Late Bay”.
This second-generation Type 2 lost its distinctive split front windscreen; it was also slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor. Its common nicknames are Bread loaf and Bay-window, or Loaf and Bay for short. At 1.6-litres the engine was also slightly larger, and noiw produced 47hp. The battery and electrical system was upgraded to 12 volts, and the new model also did away with the swing axle rear suspension and transfer boxes previously used to raise ride height. Instead, half-shaft axles fitted with constant velocity joints raised ride height without the wild changes in camber of the Beetle-based swing axle suspension.
The T2b was introduced by way of gradual change over three years. The first models featured rounded bumpers incorporating a step for use when the door was open (replaced by indented bumpers without steps on later models), front doors that opened to 90 degrees from the body, no lip on the front guards, unique engine hatches, and crescent air intakes in the D-pillars. The 1971 Type 2 featured a new 1.6-litre engine with dual intake ports on each cylinder head, this time DIN-rated at 50hp. An important change came with the introduction of front disc brakes and new roadwheels with brake ventilation holes and flatter hubcaps. Up until 1972, front indicators were set low on the nose rather than high on either side of the fresh air grille. 1972's most prominent change was a bigger engine compartment to fit the larger 1.7- and 2-litre engines from the Volkswagen Type 4, and a redesigned rear end which eliminated the removable rear apron and introduced the larger late tail lights. The air inlets were also enlarged to accommodate the increased cooling air needs of the larger engines. By 1974, the T2 had gained its final shape.
Devon is one of the oldest names in camper vans, the company being established in 1956 at Sidmouth in Devon converting Type 2 VWs. From the very beginning Devon has built up an enviable reputation for design, quality and value for money.

Exterior
This gorgeous Chrome Yellow example is in remarkable survivor condition covering only 29k miles from new. Incredibly original and 100% solid, the body still presents with a great shine and no major defects, but with just the right level of patina to show its originality. The underside is equally superb with no structural corrosion and has never been welded; the only welding repair to have been carried out was to the battery tray when a previous battery had leaked. All of the trims and seals remain in fine order, and amazingly an original VW side tent is still present, sure to draw some attention at the campsites.

Interior
Again, all in lovely original condition. The front cab is immaculate with no damage to the Canyon Brown seats, dash, door cards, headlining, or rubber floor mats. The original Devon interior is still fitted and in wonderful order throughout; the current owner’s wife is an interior designer and so she picked the lovely fabric that has been used for the rear seat covers and curtains. Up above, the pop-top works exactly as it should with two convenient pull-out bunks, and again the fabric is excellent. All the appliances are in fine working order.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The current owner has enjoyed several trips away and the camper has performed without fault every time. Barely run-in with a mere 29k miles from new, the van fires into life on first turn of the key and drives beautifully. This year it’s had a new battery, check over, and service, ready for its next adventure.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original chrome hubcaps are showing some patina but still look smart. The wheels are shod in new tyres at the front and the rears still have plenty of tread remaining. The brakes have also been checked and are in fine operational condition.
History File
This wonderfully preserved bay window camper was first registered in July 1976. Amazingly it comes with all its original VW/Devon manuals plus the original service book and factory data sticker. There are also plenty of invoices present in the paperwork along with MOT certificates dating right back to 1982. With its super low mileage and incredible unrestored condition this unrepeatable example is ready to be used and enjoyed for many years to come.
