BMW 2000 CS 1969

Allmän beskrivning : A charismatic 2000 CS with just 55k miles from new.

MODEL HISTORY

The BMW 2000 Coupé (internally coded E120) was introduced in June 1965. It was based on the components of the so called 'New Class' (Neue Klasse), which was produced by BMW from 1962 and enjoyed a great commercial success, helping the company to overcome the unfortunate post-war economic situation.

The 2000 CS was designed by BMW's head designer Wilhelm Hofmeister, however the body was not produced in the Munich factory. It was outsourced to the Karmann factory in Osnabrück end eventually finalised and fitted with the rest in Munich. The vehicle is easily recognisable by its rather unique front end that resulted in mixed reactions from motoring critics back in the day. Along with the 2000 C, this model introduced the two litre version of the BMW M10 engine. The new displacement of 1,991cc was achieved with the 80 millimetre stroke of the 1.8 litre version combined with an 89 millimetre bore.

A total of 13,691 BMW E120 coupés were built, mostly in the CS version that produced 120hp. Of the 13,691 cars produced, a mere 144 were converted to RHD, and of which only around 7 are known to remain in the UK. Equipped with twin carburettors and a manual 4-speed transmission, the 2000 CS was the more popular option over the 2000 C, which featured a single carburettor and delivered just just 100hp.

Equipment

Electric rear windows, Cigarette lighter, Interior light, Rear armrest, Lockable petrol cap, Heated rear windscreen.

EXTERIOR

The unique styling of the 2000 CS is complemented well by the bright red paintwork, which looks superb against the chrome detailing. The car was lightly restored a short while ago, and as such is solid with no corrosion in any of the usual weak points. Furthermore, there are no scuffs to be found but on close inspection there are some small imperfections to the paintwork. While it is not in concours condition this CS is very presentable.

Being original, some of the chrome work around the car has become pitted in places but it still fits well; both front and rear bumpers are in good condition still retaining a mirror shine. At the front the light surrounds and kidney grille are all in nice condition, with all lenses moisture-free.

INTERIOR

The interior of the car is in good condition, with the door cards and wooden dash all remaining largely unmarked. The black vinyl seats are in nice order and remain comfortable, with a single tear atop the driver's seat and a smaller one on the passenger seat. The rear bench and armrest are in fine condition indeed, and while there are a couple of pieces of loose trim to be found inside the car, the black carpets throughout are clean and all the dials are working as they should.

Opening the boot lid reveals a very clean and spacious luggage compartment. All the plastic trim and equipment are in very presentable order, finished off nicely by the spotless, fitted carpet mat.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Opening the bonnet on the car reveals the handsome two litre version of the BMW M10 engine. Being the CS, this example features the dual carburettor system and delivers 120hp. Mated to the four speed manual gearbox, it performs admirably. In fact, considering the age of the vehicle, the engine bay is remarkably clean and tidy with all rubbers and plastics appearing in good order.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 14" BMW wheel covers are in good condition showing no kerb marks or scuffs. The wheels are shod in a matching set of tyres, all of which have plenty of tread left on them. The brakes work well and pull the car up smoothly in a straight line.

HISTORY FILE

This CS has covered just 87,971km in its life, which equates to 54,662 miles. It is one of only seven left on the UK roads and recently featured in the January issue of BMW Car Magazine.

The car has undergone a light restoration and mechanical overhaul to create a charming but usable classic. Much of the mechanical work has been carried out by BMW specialists Munich Legends, with an extensive invoice detailing the parts replaced and the works carried out. Further invoices for new parts and the most recent MOT certificate are available with the car.
