BMW 320 320i Race Car 1985

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

Brought to the market as an entry-level luxury car, the E30 chassis spanned twelve years of production. Replacing the E21 in 1982 and overlapping its successor, the E36 (introduced in 1990), by four years.

Early models featured the 4-pot M10 and straight-6 M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 was replaced by the M40 engine, again utilising Motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black or coloured ones in late 1989, with the rear light clusters also made slightly bigger during this minor facelift. E30s are now referred to as pre-facelift (chrome bumpers) or facelift (plastic bumpers).

The E30 boasted a spacious cabin and a light curb weight. This was due to the suspension design that utilised Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first 3-Series to receive a service light indicator and warning light.

Exterior

This fantastic E30 320i race car has been built from the ground up with no expense spared. All of the work has been carried out by RAW motorsport who are well renowned for building race-winning cars for the BMW championship. The shell was completely stripped to bare metal and a new roll cage was welded in, the car was then fully painted inside and out before being carefully rebuilt with the best quality parts. Since being completed the owner started racing in a different series and the car was never used on track so remains in excellent condition. There is no corrosion on the car whatsoever and the underside is just as clean as the top.

Interior

The interior is fully stripped to make the car as light as possible. To comply with the regulations there are a pair of matching Corbeau bucket seats, a driver’s five-point race harness, plumbed-in fire extinguisher, battery isolator, and a quick release Alcantara-trimmed Momo steering wheel. Other great additions include the touring car-style quick shift gear selector and carbon fibre door cards. The quality of the work completed is first-rate and there are none of the normal scruffy areas normally associated with race and track cars. The dashboard is crack-free, there is no wear to either of the seats and all of the orange paintwork is very clean and presentable.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine itself has been fully rebuilt to race specifications by RAW motorsport with race cams, a full stainless steel exhaust system from the manifold back, a fuel swirl pot with filters and pump, a lightweight race battery, and many other parts which are all documented in the accompanying history file. The engine sounds fantastic and out on the road it really does give you the feeling of driving an 80s touring car, and it’s sure to be formidable on the race track.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The wheels are desirable Team Dynamics which are lightweight and really give the car that touring car look; they are all in immaculate condition and are shod in a matching set of Toyo Proxes tyres. The brakes have all been fully rebuilt with new racing discs and pads, and all of the brake pipes and fuel hoses have also been replaced with braided items. The suspension setup includes fully adjustable Avo dampers with adjustable top mounts, and all bushes and other components have been replaced.

History File

All of the work carried out by RAW motorsport is well documented in the history file and there are also plenty of photographs showing various stages of the build. The car is built to the current production BMW championship regulations and would be eligible for many other championships as well as track days. It’s also road legal so can be MOT’d, taxed, and used as an exhilarating country road hack.
