With its sporty, compact looks and rear wheel design, the Corvair was more than a mere novelty when introduced to the American public. Chevy was making a concerted effort to attract buyers that had been formerly set on imports, and their plan worked well, with the model enjoying strong sales throughout its production run. This Monza, an upper echelon version of the model, is distinguished by its more ornate trim package and was originally directed at the younger segment of the market as a more attainable alternative to the Porsche. Its rear engine design served it well, providing impressive economy for the time, as well as a smooth ride and lots of storage room up front. This '64 still wears its original Lagoon Aqua color - it's a timeless shade that's looking very solid on this open air compact, ornamented by chrome trim and emblems throughout that are in sharp condition. After more than a half century of service, the body alignment remains strong on this unique Chevy, and its doors, hood and trunk all open and shut smoothly. For protection from the elements, there's a white cloth convertible top neatly tucked under its boot, ready to raise into place and still sporting a clear plastic window.
Climb in and you'll be surrounded by a thoroughly vintage driving environment that's been thoroughly refurbished while remaining in its original configuration. The low backed buckets up front and bench seat in back are very well padded, with aqua vinyl covers that still look fresh and unwrinkled, and they're bracketed by door panels featuring very sharp Corvair emblems sitting snugly against their frame. The interior space on hand is surprising - especially the real estate separating the front and back seating to afford your passengers in back with plenty of legroom - and the carpet sitting underneath looks as if it's seen very little action. In keeping with the rest of the car, the dash area looks very clean, featuring original gauges that still function as intended, control knobs and switches that are all securely in place and a dash pad across the top that shows no cracking. Up front, the storage area is very clean and unusually spacious - a by-product of the Corvair's rear engine design - so even with its full size factory spare in place there's a lot of room remaining.
A 164 cubic inch flat six cylinder sits in the rear engine compartment, carrying a pair of single barrel, downdraft carbs and surrounded by plenty of working room. The engine fires right up and runs very smoothly, teaming with a 4-speed manual transmission that's also in good form. This '64 benefits from some engineering refinements unavailable to its predecessors, including a more powerful engine, finned drum brakes to dissipate heat more efficiently and softer springs in front and back for a more luxurious ride on its 13" Chevrolet spinner-type wheels outfitted with Cooper Trendsetter SE tires. The undercarriage must be seen to be believed - it sports a near-museum quality appearance, with clean, solid floorboards and ruler-straight frame rails.
