Here's a rare truck that an entire nation was eager to see. World War II was barely a memory, and 1946 was the first full model year for civilian production, and so a Ford truck like this is a cherished piece of American history. Then add in a star power from a TV restoration, and this might just be the coolest post-war truck you can get your hands on.
Fans of All Girls Garage and Truck U on Velocity might recognize this shimmering black beauty. Its restoration is well documented on the TV shows, so it's a star car and you really know what kind of work went into it. The professional application of the mirror black is just the beginning. Now that we were out of the war in '46, some of the great American iconic elements came back, and this pickup showcases them perfectly. It starts up front with a waterfall chrome grille and bright chrome bumper. Plus, the end of rubber and other material shortages means the return of whitewalls and a full-sized spare. It's all finished off with a real wood truck bed that looks fantastic.
Pickups were the first civilian vehicles to come back after WWII because they were the workhorses needed to help rebuild in a peacetime economy. There's no better reminder than with the no-nonsense interior. The exterior black paint is repeated on the door panes, roof, and dash. And it's joined by a restored black vinyl bench seat and rubber flooring. Everything feels neatly original, right down to the heater. That's the fun of a truck like this. When you grab the steel steering wheel, and gaze over the classic gauge panel, you start to think about the seven decades of stories that lie within this sheetmetal.
On a classic pickup this authentic so far, it shouldn't be a surprise to see such an excellent example of Ford's 226 cubic-inch flathead six-cylinder. Back in '46 this provided plenty of torque for hauling, but today it just adds to this pickup's industrial symphony of simplicity. It is a rhythmic roar that feels like being in charge of a mini locomotive as the tempo increases with the acceleration. The three-speed manual transmission shifts crisply and the brakes have been properly maintained. Leaf springs, two-piece wheel trim, and bias ply tires are far from modern, which makes them perfect in this time capsule of a pickup. In the end, the full experience of being behind the wheel feels like rolling history.
This vintage Ford has so many interesting elements to its history and full restoration that its next home should be with someone who likes being the storyteller at car shows.
