Ford Mustang 289 V8 1965

What could be more fun than a great-running 1965 Mustang coupe with a slick Ivy Green paint job and a 4-speed manual gearbox? Appealing from top to bottom, this Mustang has been built as an all-around performer that you can be proud to show at the local cruise nights.
There really isn't much you can do to an early Mustang to improve its looks, so the fellow who built this one focused on getting it straight instead. The sheetmetal is in good shape thanks to a considerable investment in getting things right. Two-stage urethane creates the shine, and the paint is a refreshing change from all the bright red and black Mustangs you usually see at car shows. It also works really well with the slightly more formal coupe body, which helps it keep a low profile. The paint is driver-grade, and there's no shame in that, which only means you'll be encouraged to get behind the wheel and use the car regularly, which, of course, is what it was meant to do. Gorgeous chrome bumpers have been retained front and rear, as well as all the original Mustang emblems. There's also a familiar '289' badge on the front fender, which always means fun in an early Mustang.
The car's standard black interior looks beautifully preserved and appears to be mostly stock. The floor is covered with recent black carpets, the seat covers are reproductions, and fresh door panels look surprisingly upscale. The seats show some very minor stretching and comfort marks, but nothing that needs attention, and the headliner fits well with no sagging. The A/C looks like the same unit you would have received as a dealer-installed option in 1965, fully functional and using R134a refrigerant. The original AM radio is right where it's been for decades and while the gauges are the standard Mustang instruments, they appear to be pretty recent. And, of course, a center console with a Hurst 4-speed is always a great find in a vintage pony. There's also a nicely finished trunk with a correct mat.
As I mentioned, power comes from an A-code 289 cubic inch V8 that sticks to the factory recipe for performance. That's a 4-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, and 225 horsepower, making this coupe a lot of fun on the road. The engine bay is simple, bathed in satin black, and wears a set of stock Ford Blue valve covers and a correct chrome air cleaner, creating a clean, stock look that works well with the car's performance-inspired personality. The A/C system uses a modern compressor and R134a refrigerant and an upgrade power dual master cylinder manages the upgraded front disc brakes. The chassis is original but clean, the torque boxes are in good shape, and while the exhaust system is older, it sounds great. Wheels are classic styled steel wheels that always look right on early Mustangs, wearing staggered 205/70/14 front and 225/60/14 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials.
Cool Mustangs are still out there, and many of them are still very reasonably priced. With an elegant color, that 4-speed, and a nice-running small block under the hood, it's the kind of fun car that populates most local shows and cruise nights.
