You won't find many rides that capture the styling sensibilities of their era as ably as this 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V does. A seriously cool ride sporting a great exterior color, it's a veritable rolling homage to the flash and flamboyance of the late '70s. Some well-focused structural work was performed just a few years back to help strengthen it for the future and the magnetic curb appeal of this roomy cruiser is undeniable.
Coming in at a full 230 inches - that's just short of 20 feet - the Mark V has the distinction of being the longest coupe ever to leave a Ford assembly line. It's an awesome sight to behold - its length makes an immediate impact on you, and you can't help but think that it must have been a bold declaration to the effect that, "Gas prices are soaring and fuel will soon be scarce, but for now, you shall cruise in comfort!" This attention magnet is clad in a tranquil blue shade that's an effective counterpoint to the flash of its exterior and is in pretty strong shape, as well. There are some great visual features on display here - it's hard to get much cooler than an opera window and the one here is surrounded by vinyl that was replaced not long ago, so it's looking its best. Step up to the front of the car and you'll see a pair of well-aligned hidden headlights straddling a stately center grille and a high-standing hood ornament over a nice straight bumper. Journey to the back of the car by way of its lengthy front fenders and generously proportioned doors and you'll be greeted with an awesome vinyl covered accent on the deck lid that matches the color of the roof above. This is one stylish vehicle.
The blue cloth interior inside the doors is also a great visual representative of its time. Both the extra-wide front buckets and rear bench seat feature tuck and roll surfaces reminiscent of a well-padded sofa, with no tears to be found, though some upholstery cleaner will likely pay some dividends here. The dash area sports some nice-looking woodgrain accents and a pad across the top that shows no major issues, even after all these years, and an AM radio sits at the center with an 8-track player just underneath to provide a proper late '70s audio vibe. The air conditioning is blowing with plenty of conviction to fill the sizable cabin with cool air to keep you and your passengers comfortable. As you'd expect from the proportions of the cabin, there's no shortage of legroom in back. Even with the full-sized spare tucked inside, there's also all kinds of room in the trunk.
Underneath the considerable hood a sizable 460 cubic inch V8 sits in an engine bay whose own tape measure worthy dimensions leave the powerplant with plenty of room between the shock towers. Though everything inside remains in stock configuration, the components look surprisingly fresh - both the air cleaner and valve covers sport a vibrant blue and the hoses and wiring look to be in good shape. The outsized big block teams with a 3-speed automatic transmission to provide just the low-effort driving experience you'd want in a lengthy cruiser like this. Power steering makes navigating this land yacht a breeze, while power disc brakes at all four corners provide it with dependable stops as it cruises on its set of 15" stock Lincoln rims, wrapped with American Classic whitewall radials with a fitting, era-appropriate look.
