The Midget was built to be fun with no fluff added in - qualities of that still have a lot of appeal in the modern times. So you get the classic attractiveness of a long hood and short rear deck that's built with a true purpose to take on the road. But a Midget like this also has a very cool attractiveness that cannot be denied. The Damask Red paint is an updated color. It has a finish that you get on a car made for driving, but it still has the right look to make sure this sunshine-friendly MG has a good gloss in the sun light. The deeper red also looks good with the black bumpers. Plus, those are part of a total package that coordinates with the black rocker panels and black folding roof when it's in place. And it's hard not to love a true British classic with so many vintage details, like the stone screens on the headlights, rear luggage rack, and genuine center-lock wire wheels.
When you take the top down, the full black interior and black boot cover mean this one continues to have a well-coordinated style inside and out. MG understands small cars, and so the interior was built to feel good with high-back bucket seats and good legroom. This is a highly original setup. For some that may mean taking some of the value price to invest in areas, but also many of us get excited about pieces that we don't get to find in other MGs. It's everything from the genuine Smiths gauges to the working British Leyland branded AM/FM radio. There are even some nice extras for true drivers, like a cleanly installed Bosch temp gauge and a racing-style tonneau to go over the interior.
These final generation Midgets received the largest motor ever available to these sprightly MGs. The 1493 cc inline four under the hood produced more torque than the earlier 1275 cc unit, which now made it better suited to American tastes. Add this to better gearing, and this was a quicker car with entertaining performance. The engine bay has the look of regular maintenance, including the fundamentals, like hoses, wires, and Stromberg side-draft carburetor. The setup is specifically built for you to take advantage of the fully-synchronized four-speed gearbox and get the most out of this motor. The light body weight, independent front suspension, and front disc brakes all contribute to the sporting attitude.
