Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 1990

Allmän beskrivning : A super 205, just three owners from new with fantastic history.

MODEL HISTORY

The 205 GTI had everything when new, and still does - sharp handling, light weight for added chuckability and an unburstable engine that sings the more you rev it.
 

Ever since the first 1.6-litre 205 GTi went on sale in April 1984, the eulogies to the car have appeared thick and fast. With 105bhp on tap from its all-alloy 1580cc four-pot, superb handling and reasonable build quality (they can be a bit flimsy), the 205 GTI soon became a favourite with the motoring press and car buyers. Sometimes owners got a bit carried away and overcooked it on the bends, sometimes those who pranged the car had ‘borrowed' it without asking, but everyone who drove it reckoned the Pug was one of the best drives available - at any money.
 

In 1985 Peugeot's barking mad 205 T16 rally car won the World Rally Championship, and in 1986 the convertible 205 GTI went on sale, neatly badged the CTI. Peugeot were on the crest of a wave with their small hatch.
 

Things got even more fun - and more easily out of shape - when the 1.9-litre car arrived in January 1987, with 130bhp and disk brakes all round. So it wasn't overshadowed by its bigger brother, tweaks to the cylinder head and camshaft in 1987 meant power for the 1.6-litre car rose to 115bhp and in the following year a new dashboard was fitted with higher quality interior trim, including a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

EXTERIOR

Every bit the iconic hot hatch, this little Peugeot looks splendid with its Alpine White paintwork and contrasting black and red trim. The finish is to a great standard overall and the bodywork presents well throughout. Furthermore the car is free from any scrapes or scuffs, with the bumpers and rubbing strips in fine order too.
 

In addition to the sliding sunroof the 205 also features a reflective 'GTi' decal on the tailgate, a nice period accessory as fitted from new. All in all, the car is not what some might consider a 'garage queen' but certainly does remain a very useable example to be driven and enjoyed.

INTERIOR

Exuding eighties chic the interior of the 205 does not disappoint. On close inspection the delicate cloth upholstery remains in great order with absolutely no rips or tears to speak of. Typically there is some very light sagging to the fabric on the bolsters, but certainly nothing untoward for a car such as this.
 

The dash, fascia, and centre console present extremely well and maintain a fresh finish; even the factory Clarion cassette player is still in place. Furthermore, the door cards are pristine and the carpet is finished with a set of black overmats in the footwells.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The Peugeot has been well maintained over the years and is complete with a documented service history, which stretches from the first year of the car's life right up to the current mileage. In addition to this the timing belt has been renewed three times, most recently at 83,406 miles. A new clutch was fitted just 8k miles ago.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Sitting on its original set of 14-inch ‘pepper pot' wheels the GTi has an assertive yet playful stance. The alloys are in very good condition and are free from any major curb marking, although there is some light crazing to the lacquer on the polished centres. They are shod in good quality tyres with ample tread remaining.

HISTORY FILE

The 205 was first registered to a Mrs Roberston on 27th April 1990. It was supplied new by Mayfield Garage Ltd, Halifax, and cost £8,415.65 according to the original sales invoice still present in the paperwork. Since that time it has had just three keepers and has covered a modest 85k miles.
 

In the history file you'll find the dealer-supplied document pack with all the associated manuals, the service booklet, plus an original accessories brochure with price list. There is also a stack of invoices and every MOT certificate up until 2013. The service history is as follows:
