Porsche 944 Turbo 1986

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

For the 1985 model year Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo (known internally as the 951). It was fitted with a turbocharged and intercooled version of the standard 944's engine that produced 217hp at 6000 rpm. The Turbo was the first car to use a ceramic port liner to retain exhaust gas temperature, and with new forged pistons it was also the first vehicle to produce an identical power output with or without a catalytic converter. Over and above the standard 944 the Turbo featured several other changes, such as improved aerodynamics, notably an integrated front bumper. It was further equipped with a strengthened gearbox with a different final drive ratio, external oil coolers for both the engine and transmission, 16-inch allohy wheels, and a slightly stiffer suspension to handle the extra weight. The Turbo's front and rear brakes were borrowed from the Porsche 911, with Brembo 4-piston fixed calipers and 12-inch discs; ABS was also standard.

Equipment

Mahogany Brown Metallic paintwork, Burgundy leather/leatherette upholstery, 5-speed manual transmission, 16-inch ‘Teledial’ alloy wheels, Sports seats with electric adjustment, Limited-slip differential, Air conditioning, Sport shock absorbers, Sunroof, Heated and electric passenger door mirror, Electric windows, Central locking, Protective side mouldings, Rear window wiper, Top tinted windscreen, Radio delete, Retractable luggage cover, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, UK-supplied (C16), Spare key.

Exterior

Finished in rare Mahogany Brown Metallic this ‘86 Turbo strikes a stunning pose against our studio backdrop. Other than a few small marks and some expected stone chips along the sills the car presents very nicely indeed. It’s not a flawless example but is really well preserved, remaining free from any notable dents or prominent blemishes. After a full detail and machine polish on arrival with us the paintwork retains a great depth of shine, and even finer details such as the bumper trims and rear spoiler present in excellent condition. A very smart example of the fast-appreciating 944, in a particularly eye-catching colour combination.

Interior

In keeping with the exterior of the car, the interior does not disappoint. The colour of the upholstery complements the paintwork very nicely and the condition of the leather is excellent. Some desirable factory options include the deeply bolstered sports seats, removable sunroof panel, and ice-cold air conditioning. The rich Burgundy hue extends from the seats to the centre console, dash, door cards and into the footwells where the spotless carpets are well protected by a set of genuine Porsche overmats in black. Another nice feature is the chunky sports steering wheel that not only feels great in hand but also looks the part with minimal wear to report. All the switchgear feels reassuringly solid to operate and the leather gear knob is like new. Being really picky there are one or two minor cracks on the dash top but certainly nothing to detract from the overall highly impressive finish.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay is very well presented and shows no signs of any damage, rust, or previous poor repair. The paintwork remains in fantastic condition and the metal components are free from any notable oxidisation. After some time in dry storage the current owner has spent in excess of £14,000 having the 944 fully re-commissioned by his trusted performance car specialists. A full vehicle health check was carried out on arrival with us and the car was found to be in great mechanical shape with a very good, solid underside. The MOT is valid until February 2024.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 944 sits on attractive 16-inch ‘Teledial’ alloy wheels, all in excellent condition with only a couple of very small marks to report on close inspection. They are shod in Uniroyal tyres all round with 7mm of tread left at the front and 4mm at the rear. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, stopping the car quickly and in a straight line; new pads and discs were fitted all round at 85k miles.

History File

This attractive Mahogany Brown 944 Turbo was first registered in Jersey in June 1986; it was supplied new by Jones’ Garage in Five Oaks. Since arriving in England in 2004 the car has seen only 2 additional keepers, as shown on the V5C. The current owner – a collector of rare classic sports cars and motorcycles – purchased the 944 back in 2016 and has since spent an eye-watering £14,000 on maintenance and servicing.

Within the accompanying History File the lucky new owner will receive the original Porsche document wallet and driver’s manual, service booklet, a raft of invoices from the current keeper’s tenure, MOT certificates, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming the car’s original build spec, and a spare key.
