They should have called these the "Indestructible", but instead Toyota just simply gave these little haulers the humble "pickup" name. No matter what you call it, you get excited when you can find a fine example like this 1980 Toyota that's both well preserved and it has useful features like four-wheel drive.
You likely already know this truck well. It was the vehicle that got you through school and/or never gave up on the jobsite. But the best part is the preserved condition of this example. The Toyota Beige cream color paint has that ideal 1980s tone. And the triple-tone stripe package just adds to this instant retro-cool. The wheels are even painted to coordinate with this, too! And you can really see someone respected this truck. The sheetmetal has an amazing fit and finish after four decades. So while the liner in the bed reminds you this one is ready for rugged duty, the overall presentation really just tells you this was someone's baby.
The same exceptional level of presentation/preservation is found on the inside, too. There are a few signs of use over a generation on the road, but the overall condition is a great representation on why these earned a tough-as-nails reputation. The two-tone bench looks great and has a comfy cloth insert. The door panels, dash, and floor all are in coordinating shades of brown/tan, and so the whole interior feels like a well-done time capsule. Everything here feels correct, right down to the AM/FM radio in this premium SR5 model. Even the four-wheel drive instructions are still on the glovebox lid. The position of the factory steering wheel, tilt column, and floor gearshift have a bit of a sporty feeling. Plus, you have all the right gauges laid out in the dash. So this classic is also ready to drive.
Under the hood is what makes these Toyota pickups so desirable. The 2.2-liter 20R motor is the part of the engine family on which Toyota has built their reputation for reliability. It looks quite honest and original. You will spot a Davis United Ignition performance distributor, and that helps this hardy Toyota fire up with the robustness you really want on a pickup like this. The two-speed 4x4 transfer case and tall 4x4 stance means this continues a go-anywhere reputation. Especially since this one also already has some serious off-road tires. Power steering and power brakes w/discs up front also make this an easy driver in-town. And no matter where you go, the five-speed manual transmission w/overdrive terrific for giving you total control.
