Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40 1979

Allmän beskrivning : A solid BJ40 Land Cruiser from 1979, with factory Thomas winch.

MODEL HISTORY

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese carmaker Toyota. It is the manufacturer's longest running series with the first generation dating back to 1951. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon, and utility truck versions. It's reliability and longevity has led to huge popularity, especially in Australia where it is the best-selling body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle. Toyota also extensively tests the Land Cruiser in the Australian outback, which is considered to be one of the toughest operating environments in both temperature and terrain.

The name 'Land Cruiser' was thought up by the technical director Hanji Umehara; "In England we had another competitor - Land Rover. I had to come up with a name for our car that would not sound less dignified than those of our competitors. That is why I decided to call it 'Land Cruiser'."

The Toyota J40 was the model designation for a Land Cruiser 40-series, made from 1960 until 1984. It was a two-door short wheelbase four-wheel-drive vehicle, with either a soft or a hardtop. Model Year 1960 brought engineering and styling changes to the series that heralded the birth of an icon; that's when the 20-series took an evolutionary step into the 40-series. The familiar fold-down windshield, solid axles and sturdy leaf springs of the 25-series remained. But design revision provided the FJ40 with its now-familiar angular lines, wrap-around rear windows and foldout rear doors, short overhangs, a horsepower boost to 125, a three-speed transmission, and the introduction of a two-speed transfer case.

But in 1974, the J40 became available with an 85hp 3.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine. This was known as the BJ40 because of it diesel ‘B' engine, as opposed to the FJ40 with its petrol ‘F' engine.

While not legal in some countries, most J40 series vehicles could have their roof and doors removed. With a folding windshield this allowed for complete open-air experience. The J40 Series also featured folding jump seats behind the passenger and drivers seats. These folding seats not only made carrying another 2 passengers possible, but also allowed for maximum cargo space.

Equipment

Factory-fitted Thomas Winch, Bull bars, Snorkel, Tow bar, Roof rack, Fold-down rear seats, Toyota tool kit, Spare wheel.

EXTERIOR

This BJ40 is in strong, solid condition with no rust to the chassis or cab. Having been restored upon arrival into the country, this rare Land Cruiser is in good order, handsomely displaying its original Dune Beige colouring. The paintwork presents well on the whole and is free from any scuffs or scratches, with all glass and lenses in good order too.

Originating from Australia, the truck provided an already solid base for a light restoration. The vehicle remains largely original with the majority of components having been reconditioned to bring the truck up to scratch. The brightwork has been re-chromed and all perished rubbers and seals have been replaced. At the front of the Land Cruiser the bull bars show no signs of any damage, and the factory-fitted Thomas winch has been overhauled and is fully operational. Present with the vehicle is the original roof rack, also presenting in good order.

INTERIOR

The interior of the J40 is sparse yet purposeful. The vinyl front seats are in great shape and retain a wonderful patina, with no scratches or tears to be found. The painted dash and fascia are in fine condition, with the switchgear still operational, and the original instruction stickers present and correct.

In the footwell the factory moulded floor-covering remains, as do the door cards, which also present well for their age. In the rear of cabin the bench seats can be neatly folded away for more baggage space, or lowered for passenger usage.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 4-cylinder 3.0-litre engine erupts with a booming diesel grunt upon first turn of the key, once the glow plugs have heated up of course! Looking under the bonnet the engine bay is very tidy indeed, with an oil and filter service having been carried out earlier this year.

In the cabin the 4-speed gear lever sits next to the H2/H4 transfer box lever, both slotting into geared positions with a solid and reassuring clunk.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

This Land Cruiser retains its stock wheels, which present in good order and display minimal age-related wear, having been powder coating during restoration. The wheels are shod in period-style all terrain tyres, each with plenty of tread remaining.

What's more, the current owner has recently spent over £2,000 having the entire brake system overhauled.

HISTORY FILE

First registered in Australia in 1979, the Land Cruiser remained in a dry climate until 2002 when the current owner imported it to the UK. The car has covered 168,294 km, which equates to a mere 104,573 miles.

Present in the history file is the original Owner's Manual as well as parts and labour invoices for recent works carried out.
