Volkswagen Corrado VR6 1995

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The VW Corrado was a compact three-door coupe sold from 1988 to 1995 and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany. Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded the VW Scirocco.

While most Corrados were built on VW’s A2 platform (shared with the Mk2 Golf), the VR6 used suspension components from the A3 model range, including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the A3's 'plus' type front axle assembly. The subsequent wider front wheel track of the VR6 necessitated the fitting of new front wings with wider wheel arches and liners along with a new front bumper assembly. The Corrado was noted for its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler that raised automatically at speeds in excess of 62mph.

The twelve valve VR6 engine was introduced for the 1992 model year and came in two variants: a 2.8-litre 179hp model for the US and Canadian markets, and a 2.9-litre 187hp for Europe. Along with these new engines the Corrado’s styling was also updated with a new front grille and fog lamps. The VR6 engine provided a compromise between both V-shaped and straight engines by placing the two cylinder banks at an angle of 15 degrees, with a single cylinder head. This design allowed engineers to fit a six-cylinder engine into roughly the space previously occupied by four-cylinder engines, while closely approaching the smoothness of a straight-six design.

Equipment

Candy White paintwork, Black leather upholstery, Heated front sports seats, 5-Speed manual transmission, Electrically-adjustable and heated door mirrors, Electric sunroof, Electric windows, Electronic differential lock, Electric rear spoiler, Leather steering wheel, Integrated front fog lights, Becker CD player, Original Scorpion 5000 Series alarm, VW first aid kit, Spare wheel, Spare key, Rubber VW overmats.

Exterior

This super low mileage VR6 presents impeccably in gleaming Candy White. The paintwork still looks really fresh and appears in exquisite condition throughout, the only real negatives to report being a couple of light frontal stone chips. Looking along both sides the panels are straight and true and, having clearly been garaged all its life, there’s no evidence of corrosion in any of the common weak spots. The bumpers are entirely scuff-free front and rear, and the lights are all clear with no signs of any moisture ingress. Finished with its supplying-dealer rear window sticker this has to be the finest example we have seen, looking every bit the low mileage of just 32k.

Interior

The leather-trimmed interior presents in stunning original condition with no signs of any major wear to be found. Both front sports seats remain in truly fantastic condition, even to the driver’s bolster which in this case hints at only light use, the leather still notably supple throughout. There are no cracks on the dash and the switchgear is all pleasingly unmarked; the original leather steering wheel and gearknob are also in excellent order. A subtle but nice addition within the cabin is a Becker Grand Prix CD player that sits well with the interior aesthetic. At the rear of the car the seats appear almost unused, and in the boot space you’ll fine pristine carpets, an undamaged parcel shelf, and spare wheel. A full set of rubber VW overmats are included.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 2.9-litre V6 sparks into life first turn of the key, producing a wonderful soundtrack as it propels you from 0-60mph in little over 6 seconds, and on to a top speed of 145mph. The five-speed manual gearbox is essential to this performance, handling the engine’s power perfectly through the gears. The engine bay is of course very tidy, not overly dressed but in excellent original condition. The accompanying service book is stamped 10 times, the last service having been carried out in September 2020 at 31,085 miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The VR6 sits on its original 15-inch Speedline alloys, all in perfect un-refurbished condition with absolutely no marking or age-related wear to speak of. They are shod in a recently fitted and matching set of Hankook tyres, all with at least 7mm of tread remaining. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a halt swiftly and in a straight line.

History File

This magnificent and surely unrepeatable example was first registered in September 1995. It was supplied new through Loders Garage in Dorchester and has now driven just 32k miles in the hands of only 2 registered keepers (current since 2009). Specified from new with heated black leather upholstery (costing £1,272) and a 5000 Series alarm system (£551) the original sales invoice shows the car to have cost £21,544.92 on the road.

Following on from an ECU failure around 10,100 miles a brand new engine was fitted by VW in 2000, costing the first owner an eye-watering £7,163.75 (as per the included supplying-dealer invoice). Other notable work includes a new clutch at 25,971 miles.

The service book has been stamped 10 times, most recently in September 2020 less than 1k miles ago. The History File is complete with all owners’ manuals, a raft of main dealer/specialist invoices, and every single MOT certificate further verifying the low mileage.
