Volkswagen Corrado VR6 Storm 1995

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The VW Corrado was a compact three-door coupe sold from 1988 to 1995 and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany. Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded the VW Scirocco.

While most Corrados were built on VW’s A2 platform (shared with the Mk2 Golf), the VR6used suspension components from the A3 model range, including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the A3's 'plus' type front axle assembly. The subsequent wider front wheel track of the VR6 necessitated the fitting of new front wings with wider wheel arches and liners along with a new front bumper assembly. The Corrado was noted for its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler that raised automatically at speeds in excess of 62mph.

The twelve-valve VR6 engine was introduced for the 1992 model year and came in two variants: a 2.8-litre 179hp model for the US and Canadian markets, and a 2.9-litre 187hp for Europe. Along with these new engines the Corrado’s styling was also updated with a new front grille and fog lamps. The VR6 engine provided a compromise between both V-shaped and straight engines by placing the two cylinder banks at an angle of 15 degrees, with a single cylinder head. This design allowed engineers to fit a six-cylinder engine into roughly the space previously occupied by four-cylinder engines, while closely approaching the smoothness of a straight-six design.

For the UK market only, VW introduced the Corrado VR6 Storm. As well as special badging and a colour-keyed front grille, the Storm had BBS wheels and many previously optional items, such as leather upholstery, as standard. Only 500 Storm models were produced: 250 in Classic Green with cream leather and 250 in Mystic Blue with black leather.

Although criticised at the time by some as being too expensive, the VW Corrado was hailed by Auto Express as “one of VW’s best ever driver’s cars” and the VR6 as being “by far the most desirable version”.

Equipment

Classic Green pearl effect paintwork, Cream leather upholstery, 16-inch BBS alloy wheels, 5-speed manual transmission, Heated front sports seats, Electric tilt/slide sunroof, Leather steering wheel and gear knob, Storm badging, Colour-coded grille, Electric windows, Heated and electric door mirrors, Front fog lights, Electric rear spoiler, Remote central locking, Space saver spare wheel, Original VW document pack and manuals.

Exterior

Finished in sublime Classic Green pearl – one of only two colours available to the Storm – this low mileage example presents very nicely indeed. Following a full machine polish by our in-house detailer the paintwork displays a lovely deep shine throughout and, while not 100% free of imperfections, remains in very good original condition. At the front end there is the usual dusting of light stone chips including to the nearside indicator and fog lamp, although there are no signs of moisture ingress to report. The car is nice and straight along both sides with all the trims and seals still retaining a great finish. The badges are also in fine original fettle and the automatic spoiler operates exactly when it should. At the rear end there are some visible paint imperfections localised to the offside corner and bumper but otherwise it’s a superb example overall.

Interior

The interior remains in fantastic original condition. The cream sports seats have all worn very well with little more than some expected surface wear to the driver’s bolsters as evidence of the car’s 27 years of age. All too often pale interiors such as this end up being re-connolised and so it’s nice to see that no previous repairs have been carried out here, the leather still feeling notably soft and supple throughout. The cream door cards are also in great shape with no marking or discolouration, the steering wheel and gear knob show very few signs of wear, and the dash is without any cracks or sun damage. Having always been protected by a set of VW mats the pale carpets are remarkably unworn and at the rear the seats appear to have seen very little use.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This lovely VR6 has always been maintained to a very high standard, as evidenced by the 20 service stamps in the original maintenance booklet. The longest time the car has ever been between services is 3 years when it was placed into dry storage before the owner moved abroad. Since arriving at 4 Star a full vehicle health check and major service have been carried out. For additional peace of mind a fresh MOT will be done upon sale.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Corrado sits on its original 16-inch BBS, all in perfect unmarked condition having just been fully refurbished to the highest standard by Lepsons; new BBS centre badges have also been fitted since the photos were taken. The wheels are shod in matching Goodyear tyres with ample tread left. The brakes have also been inspected and remain in excellent operational condition having just been fitted with new pads and discs all round.

History File

First registered in June 1995 this rare VR6 Storm – 1 of 250 produced in Classic Green – has driven only 49k miles in the hands of just 3 registered keepers (the current since 2011). The car is accompanied by the most amazing service record with 20 stamps in the original maintenance booklet, as detailed below. Following on from a 2 year period in dry storage the Corrado has just returned from a major service at the current mileage by our trusted classic car specialists. Other items carried out included a full vehicle inspection, new discs and pads all round, a new battery, drive belt, handbrake adjustment, a new rear brake caliper, and brake fluid change.
