Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 1991

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The VW Golf Mk2 succeeded the Mk1 from 1983 and remained in production until late 1992. Volkswagen reportedly spent £500 million developing the Mk2. The car slightly grew in wheelbase, with greater exterior and interior dimensions over its predecessor. Despite this it still retained the overall look of the Mk1, albeit slightly more rounder as to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag. During the life of the Mk2 there were a variety of updates and revisions to styling and trim, the most notable was the introduction of the 'big bumpers' introduced in the European market during the August 1989 facelift.

The success of the Mk1 GTI was continued with the sporty Mk2 GTI, and to capitalise on the worldwide success of the Mk1 GTI Volkswagen chose to release the Mk2 GTI in the same year as the rest of the fleet. It featured a 1.8-litre 8v engine with a slightly more powerful 16v variant following shortly. The 8v was particular popular for its low-down torque and excellent driveability. During its midlife update the 8v unit benefited from the introduction of a Digifant engine management system.

Popularity of the Mk2 grew from the 1987 advertisement “Changes” in which Paula Hamilton bearing a close resemblance to Diana, Princess of Wales is seen leaving her husband, posting her wedding ring back through the letterbox, ditching her mink coat, throwing the house keys at the cat and dumping the pearl necklace BUT keeping the car keys; it used the tag line “If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen”. The commercial was a hit and changed the way cars were advertised from then on.

Equipment

Pearl Grey Metallic paintwork, Grey/red striped cloth upholstery, 15-inch BBS cross-spoke alloy wheels, Power steering, Electric windows, Manual sunroof, Stainless steel exhaust, Golf ball gearknob, Lockable glove compartment, Digital clock, Ash tray, Cigar lighter, Heated rear window, Spare key.

Exterior

This 3dr ‘big bumper’ Mk2 GTI presents in great condition throughout, the paintwork still retaining a deep metallic shine across every panel with only a few discreet blemishes to note on close inspection. All the bumpers, wheel arch trims and rubbing strips are still in really good order, free from any major scuffs or scrapes, and the lights are clear with no signs of moisture ingress to be found. Looking along both sides the car is nice and straight with even panel gaps to report. Not a concours car but still a superb example, ready to be driven and very much enjoyed.

Interior

The interior space has worn particularly well throughout. Looking closely there is none of the usual wear to the bolsters or seat bases, the unmarked fabric still retaining its red-striped pattern that’s free from any rips or stains. The dashboard and switchgear are also in superb condition with no unsightly cracks or damage to report. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gear knob are in great shape, and at the rear the rear seats are also well preserved. The boot area is tidy with only some expected marking to the backs of the seats, and the parcel shelf is in great original condition having never been fitted with any aftermarket speakers.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay is clean and tidy, not overly dressed but in fine original order. The Golf has been well looked after throughout its life and was most recently serviced in July 2021 at 108,165 miles. The timing belt was last changed in 2018. Since arriving with us the car has been fully inspected for the new keeper’s peace of mind, the only advisory item requiring immediate attention being a faulty handbrake cable, which has since been rectified. Out on the road the GTI performs well; the gearbox still feels tight and the engine sounds great through the stainless exhaust without being overly boomy. The MOT is valid until April 2022.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Filling the arches of this big bumper Mk2 are the correct 15-inch BBS cross-spoke alloy wheels, all in excellent order with no signs of any curb damage or age-related wear to speak of. Finished with a matching set of BBS centre badges they are shod in Toyo tyres all round. The brakes have also been inspected and remain in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line.
