General description : 1957 Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS 3-Window Coupe by Touring
s/n 1900C10596, engine no. 130810564
Two-Tone Red and Silver with Cream Interior

The 1900 was Alfa Romeo’s first all new postwar model and featured a number of innovative features including unit chassis, and dual overhead cam inline-4 with hemispherical combustion chambers and aluminum alloy cylinder head. While most examples were sedans, a handful of special bodied 1900 C Sprint and Super Sprint (CS and CSS) coupes were built, weighing several hundred pounds less and featuring stylish bodies by coachbuilders such as Bertone, Castagna, Touring, Vignale, and Zagato. The five window coupe by Touring was among the most attractive of these, and 949 examples were built between 1951 and 1954, using Touring’s famous Superleggera construction. Most were fitted to Super specification chassis, but a handful were fitted to cars of the most desirable Super Sprint (or CSS) specification. This variant was differentiated by its twin downdraft Solex carburetors and 5-speed manual transmission.

This particular car is a matching-numbers genuine CSS bodied by Touring, as confirmed directly by Alfa Romeo’s Automobilismo Storico Centro Documentazione (Historic Automobile Documentation Center). It is an extremely late production car, with the last example being 10600. One of 854 examples built, the car has the desirable CSS equipment including Borrani wire wheels, 5-speed floor shift gearbox, and twin carburetors. The car was completed on the 27th of July 1957 and sold new on the 18th of December 1957 to Hoffman Motor Car Company in New York. Its original color was red.

In more recent years, the car has seen a comprehensive restoration in 2012-13, which included paint, chrome, engine, transmission, clutch, brakes, and engine ancillaries such as the starter and generator. Various consumable such as brake hydraulic components, brake shoes, hoses, and belts were also replaced and there is a thick binder of invoices showing the attentive car the car received during its 2012-2013 restoration. Today, the car is in beautiful condition and also runs and drives very well.

The car is extremely nice cosmetically. The body is straight with very good to excellent gaps. The paint was done to high standards and is in beautiful condition. The car sits on sparkling Borrani wire wheels with Michelin X tires and the chrome and brightwork are excellent across the board. The glass and lights are in very good shape, with a few marks to the front windscreen.

The interior was equally well-done, with high quality upholstery and carpet. The carpet is nearly unmarked and the leather has the slightest mellowing, which is extremely attractive. The dashboard is excellent including the instruments, which have been nicely restored. The bright trim throughout the interior is very nice, including the polished kick panels and door jambs. The car is fitted with the desirable and valuable flat Nardi steering wheel and vintage Autovox radio.

The engine compartment was beautifully restored and has a highly polished valve cover and refinished intake plenum. The engine itself, along with the intake system, ancillaries, and inner fenders are all excellent as well. The engine block is matching to the car. The trunk was also restored with new rubber mat and restored spare with new matching tire.

The car runs and drives well. The engine starts easily and is well tuned, the clutch is positive and the gearbox is a pleasure with excellent synchromesh and a very modern fuss-free feel. The the chassis and suspension are tight. The car is easy to use and comfortable, making it ideally suited to event use.

This is a excellent opportunity to acquire an event-eligible coachbuilt Alfa Romeo. The car is a beautifully restored late production car and is a genuine CSS with desirable equipment. The combination of robustness and modern mechanical specification (by 1950s standards) makes the 1900 a great event car and this example is exceptionally nice. Indeed, seasoned connoisseurs of motoring consistently demonstrated the extent to which they favor the 1900, particularly for long distance driving events. The car comes with a thick binder of invoices from the restoration, showing the thoroughness and cost of the restoration.
