Audi 100 1973

General description : An outstanding 100GL, with a mere 34k miles from new.

MODEL HISTORY

In direct opposition and in secret to the Volkswagen board, the 1968 Audi 100 was born. An instant commercial success this Audi was the first in the series of front engine water-cooled cars from the Volkswagen group famous for its rear engine air-cooled models. The story goes like this: In 1965 Volkswagen purchased Auto Union (Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer) from Mercedes as demand for the Beetle had outstripped Volkswagen's production capacity; Auto Union had a nearly-new production plant at Ingolstadt that was quickly converted for Beetle assembly. With poor sales of the DKW F102 and the new Audi F103 failing to prove itself in the market the Volkswagen boss Heinrich Nordhoff in the belief that the rear engine air-cooled layout was the future gave orders that no further Auto Union models (inc. Audi) be developed.

It was an engineer by the name of Ludwig Kraus that failed to share Nordhoff's view and set about in secret developing the Audi 100. The first that Nordhoff learned about the project was the presentation of a production ready prototype! Thankfully for Audi fans, Nordhoff gave it the thumbs up. Shown to the press on 26th November 1968, the C1 platform Audi 100 was the company's largest car and spawned several variants, two and four door saloons and a fast back coupe.

The Audi 100 was named after the then engine output of 100ps. It surpassed the sales expectations of Volkswagen to the extent that additional production had to be set up at Volkswagen's own plant in Wolfsburg. By 1971 the 500,000th Audi was produced making it the most successful model in the company's history at the time.

The top of the range 100GL Automatic was introduced in 1972 and featured the 1.9L engine formerly used in only the Fastback Coupe S.

Equipment

Automatic transmission, Front & Rear headrests, Rear armrest, Audi 100 Coupe S instrumentation, Wood trim, Quartz Clock, Original 1970s Blaupunkt Radio Cassette, Sun visors with vanity mirrors, Heated rear windscreen.

EXTERIOR

This Audi was taken off the road in 1985 and dry stored until 2011 when it was subject to a no-expense spared re-commissioning, bringing it to time-warp condition. It was subject to a full bare metal respray in the original colour of Tibet Orange and the underneath received a professional preservation treatment.

During the car's renovation every panel was removed, stripped back, and repainted inside and out. Over 300 hours was spent on restoring the bodywork to how it was in 1973. On close inspection the chrome is near perfect and is offset beautifully against the gleaming paintwork. The end result is a jaw-dropping and ultra rare piece of Audi history.

INTERIOR

Having had covers on the seats from new, the interior is in truly excellent condition. The front and rear seats, upholstered in black velvet velour, present like new. The dash and door cards are also very good with zero marks to be found. Similarly, the wood trim adorning the fascia, doors, and instrument cluster remains in perfect order.

Opening the boot reveals a large and tidy luggage area, complete with spare wheel.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This pampered Audi has recently received a thorough mechanical overhaul. Having been stood for so long the current owner wanted to make sure the car started and drove the way Audi intended.

Valve stem seals, a new exhaust, new plugs, filters, speedo cable, oils, and over £1,000 later this top of the range GL Automatic feels full of life and very much at one on today's modern roads.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The wheels have been shot-blasted and painted in the correct black satin paint. They are fitted with brand new genuine Audi wheel embellishers and hubcaps at a cost of over £500. The wheels are shod in a matching set of period Pirelli tyres.

The car has had new rear shock absorbers and had the braking system fully overhauled to ensure it rides and stops exactly as it should.

HISTORY FILE

This unique Audi was supplied to a gentleman who lived in Ireland with a second home in Germany. Being a patriotic German he serviced the car at Audi in Hahn nine times while at his German residence, until he took the car off the road in 1985 due to ill health.

Accompanying the extensive history is the original blue Audi Document Holder, complete with the dealer-supplied Service Booklet, Owner's Handbook, and Automatic transmission booklet. Present also are recent MOT certificates, and lots of bills for parts and work done.

These early Audi's are becoming a rare sight on UK roads and are being sought after by astute collectors and enthusiasts. This must be one of the best example left; finished in a magnificent 1970s colour combination, with ultra-low mileage, and full Audi History, the car is truly unrepeatable.

About Audi
Audi Automobilwerke GmbH Zwickau was founded by August Horch and his partners. In August 1928, the majority of shares in Audiwerke AG were acquired by Jørgen Rasmussen, the owner of Dampf-Kraft-Wagen (DKW) In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, DKW, and Wanderer, to form Auto Union. Auto Union used the four interlinked rings as their logo, the Audi badge today, representing these four brands.

After the war, Daimler-Benz had taken 100% holding in the Auto Union company by1959. By mid-sixties they had decided to sell to Volkswagen -a decision Mercedes must be regretting by now. Under VW control they took the two-stroke DKW F102, fitted it with a modern Mercedes designed four-stroke engine et voilá a new modern Audi had emerged. The rest, as they say, is history.
