Bentley 3 Litre ½ litre Top Hat Saloon by Freestone and Webb 1935

General description : Vintage and Prestige are proud to offer this 1936 Derby Bentley 3 ½ litre upgraded to 4.25 litre  Top Hat Saloon by Freestone and Webb For Sale.  This car is body number 1177 & is one of eight produced to this design several others of which are still extant to this day.  The coachwork is particularly elegant with perfectly executed sharp yet understated lines.
Chassis no: B185 EJ
Registration: MXS 318
B 185 EJ was first shipped to America in 1977, she was sold by Frank Dale and Stepsons after recently being rebuilt. The current owner has know this car since 1986 and finally had the opportunity to purchase in 2004.
A 4 year restoration was commissioned and at this time the decision to upgrade the car for long distance touring was made. The 3 ½ engine and gearbox were uprated to a 4 ¼ unit, uprated 3.25 back axle gearing, and even the addition of an air conditioning system, along with a modern alternator.

The engine is fitted with new high compression pistons, a deturbulated head, new valves, new springs & mark VI con rods etc.  As a result the engine is putting out far in excess of the originals horsepower allowing for very fast long distance runs at & above modern traffic speeds all conducted in a relaxed manner.
An aluminiulm high capacity radiator has also been fitted keeping the car cool on its recent run across the Utah deserts in the height of summer.  Air conditioning by "Vintage Air" keeps the cabin pleasantly cool even in swealtering temperatures.

The car is beautifuly finished in a dark metallic maroon with the roof being done in a secondary darker colour.  To the interior are dark brown hides throughout in lovely patinated condition.  The interior woodwork has been removed & refinished.  New carpets are fitted throughout.  There is an almost complete set of small tools in a recess in the boot lid.
You really need to see & drive this car to appreicate how well it goes & how much money has been poured into it.  Now UK registered.

It is in our showrroms & ready for viewing.  A great candidate for Peking Paris or any other long distance event.

About Bentley
Before becoming a mere subsidiary to Rolls-Royce, Bentley was an independent Automaker famous for the "fastest lorries in the world" e.i Bentley 4½ Litre.

Good ol' Bentley boys (A group of wealthy British motorists, mainly Woolf Barnato, Sir Henry "Tim" Birkin, steeplechaser George Duller, aviator Glen Kidston, S.C.H. "Sammy" Davis, and Dr Dudley Benjafield ) -in their trusty Bentley cars- took four consecutive victories at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930

In 1931 Bentley was taken over British Central Equitable Trust that later proved to be a front for Rolls-Royce Limited. Unhappy with his role at Rolls-Royce, W.O. Bentley left the company when his contract expired in 1935 duly joining Lagonda. This was beginning of which ultimately led Bentley cars to become more or less badge-engineered Rolls-Royce.
