BMW 520 525e 1987

General description : Model History

The E28 was the second generation of 5-Series, produced from 1981 to 1988 and replacing the E12. It was the first 5-Series with the option of anti-lock brakes (ABS) and to feature the centre console angled towards the driver. The E28 was initially produced with four and six-cylinder petrol engines, but with the introduction of the 524td in 1983, it was also the first BMW to be powered by a diesel engine.

The 525e, known as 528e in North America and Japan, used a 2.7-litre 6-cylinder M20 petrol engine that was optimised for fuel economy and torque at low engine speed, rather than the traditional high revving characteristics of the BMW straight-six. The ‘e’ meant economy, and according to BMW the 525e was more fuel efficient than the 520i, which had the same power output of 123hp.

In the UK market the model was offered only as an automatic, using a special version of the ZF 4HP22 gearbox, with a torque converter which locked up at 55mph. A tall final drive was used to take advantage of the torquey engine, giving nearly 34mph per 1,000rpm – or 100mph at just 2,950rpm. The result was commendably economical with the potential for nearly 40mpg on a run.

Equipment

Automatic transmission, Tilt and slide sunroof, Blaupunkt Melbourne cassette radio, Electric front windows, Electric aerial, Heated door mirror and driver’s door lock, Power assisted steering, Green tinted glass, Central locking with antitheft system, BMW toolkit, Spare wheel.

Exterior

The Lachssilber paint remains in very nice order. The shark nose is almost completely free of any chips, the panels are nice and straight along both sides, and there are no signs of corrosion in any of the common E28 weak spots. The factory silver stripes set the car off nicely and the paint finish maintains a lustful shine. The chrome and rubber trims are in good condition with only light patina, the only negatives being a little distortion and corrosion on the rear bumper, a few small dinks and some discreet blemishes to the paint.

Interior

The interior of this E28 is a real delight and smells like a well cared for ‘80s BMW should. The houndstooth cloth perfectly complements the silver paintwork and the condition of the fabric is excellent. The headlining is perfect, all the electrics work as they should, and other than a couple of small cracks in the dash the rest of the trim is in particularly fine fettle. The boot area is very clean and all of the tools remain in the drop down tool compartment.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Hardly run in with a mere 48k miles on the clock this 525e runs like a dream, really inspiring the driver with confidence. It performed faultlessly on its three-hour drive back to 4 Star HQ, giving excellent fuel economy along the way. The car boasts a superb maintenance record and was serviced only at BMW main dealers until 41k miles. Since arriving with us it has been fully inspected and a fresh service has been carried out for the new keeper’s piece of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The E28 is fitted with the optional ‘bottle top’ alloys that all remain in their factory paint finish, with just a few light marks to report. All of the tyres have plenty of tread remaining and the brakes are performing well having been inspected upon arrival with us.

History File

This example has only been in the hands of three owners – the first for five years, then twenty-two years, and the last for another five years. The service history is excellent with thirteen BMW main dealer stamps all in the original service book until 41,238 miles. We fully serviced the car upon arrival at 4 Star but have not stamped the book in case the new owner wishes to continue with BMW. To further verify the low mileage almost all of the MOT certificates are present and there is also a file full of more recent parts purchased for the car.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
