BMW 535 1986

General description : A right-hand drive E28 M5, with a mere 78k miles from new.

MODEL HISTORY

Launched at the 1985 Amsterdam Motor Show the E28 M5 was the fastest production saloon car of its time.

Lurking under the bonnet and disguised by its subtle looks was the mighty M88 engine, a modified unit from the BMW M1 and the same engine BMW used in the M6s of the era. A product demanded by those looking for the performance of a sports car but the practicality of a saloon car the E28 M5 was the first of many incarnations utilising this combination.

Handbuilt by a special team of BMWs finest technicians early models started life in BMWs original Preussenstrasse location near BMW AG headquarters in Munich until in late 1986 when production was moved to the newly opened BMW Motorsport headquarters in Garching.

A mere 187 RHD M5s were produced from 3/86 to 11/87.

Equipment

Air conditioning, Front and rear electric windows, Electrically adjustable door mirrors, Electrically adjustable front seats, Trip computer, Rear armrest, Cigarette lighter, Ash tray, Panasonic cassette player.

EXTERIOR

The M5's styling was very subtle making it the ultimate ‘Q car' of the 80's. This example is finished in Aero Silver metallic with the factory de-chroming option, and boasts a deep metallic sheen with no scuffs or scratches to be found whatsoever. Furthermore, the car is completely corrosion-free having spent the majority of its life in a dry climate.

The M5 bodykit gives the car a purposeful stance while the subtle rear spoiler hints at aerodynamic responsibility. The iconic off-centre tailpipes appear as new with only the car's slightly worn badges providing evidence of this example's age. Furthermore, the M5 is very straight down both sides with all plastic trim appearing healthy. The front end is virtually 100% free from any of the usual chips.

INTERIOR

The dark blue cloth is the perfect complement to the bright exterior. Although not leather, the car's upholstery has certainly stood the test of time, and displays little or no signs of wear at all. The bolsters are free from any damage or sagging and all the electric functionality operates exactly as it should.

On closer inspection, the dash is free from any cracks and the door cards are entirely scuff-free. Furthermore the steering wheel retains a good texture while the genuine BMW gear knob provides a welcome aftermarket addition. What's more, the rear seats appear as new and the headlining presents perfectly.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

An extensive detailing session has restored the powerful straight-six lump to its former glory, with all components appearing factory-fresh. Starting first turn of the key, the car sounds glorious.

There are no visible signs of corrosion under the bonnet, with the engine itself displaying little or no signs of wear whatsoever, complementing the car's good mileage.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The factory 16-inch cross spoke alloys present very well and display a lovely original patina. Showing only age-related wear and very minimal curbing, these wheels certainly still look the part. A real perfectionist may see the benefit in reconditioning a couple of them, or at least replacing the centre caps.

All the alloys are shod in Pirelli tyres, each with lots of tread remaining.

HISTORY FILE

This handsome M5 has covered a mere 125,696km from new, which equates to just 78,103 miles. The history is complemented by the service book which is stamped up to 101,432km. The car has since received a complete mechanical overhaul less than 50 miles ago, including an oil and filter change.

Present in the history file is the original stamped owner's handbook / service booklet complete with the correct white document holder. An extensive invoice for the most recent work and parts is included, along with invoices for some previous work too.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
