BMW Z3 1998

General description : Model History

The M roadster was first unveiled at the 1996 Geneva motor show, though production did not begin until later that year. It was designed as the performance version of the BMW Z3, and there were significant differences between the two variants. These included front and rear bumpers, gills, boot and mirrors. Under the skin many of the components were beefed up with the rear suspension being derived from the E30 M3 and the front suspension and brake system being taken from the E36 M3 Evo. Based on the E36 platform, the Z3 Roadster was known internally as the E36/7. The M Roadster could run a wider track under the flared wheel arches as well as wider wheels and tyres to try to tame the increased power. A dual exhaust system fed each set of three cylinders to two dual tailpipes. The Z3 M roadster was the first BMW to feature this quad exhaust design, which has since become a BMW M division signature.

The interior had a different look to the standard Z3. The sport package M-version steering wheel was standard on the M, and there was different instrumentation such as an oil temperature gauge. Finally, the car was available in M-specific colors, which were not released for the regular Z3, at least in the early production years (not counting BMW's Individual program).

A grand total of just 918 ‘S50’ M Roadsters were produced in right-hand drive.

Those voluptuous Imola Red curves look marvelous under our studio lighting. The dazzling paintwork remains in fine order with no scratches, dings, lacquer peel, or corrosion to be found. On very close inspection there are just a handful of light stone chips at the front end, with areas such as the wing mirrors and flared arches amazingly free from unsightly blemishes. The electric-folding soft-top also remains in excellent shape, the car having always been correctly stored when not in use.

Interior

The two-tone Nappa leather sports seats are in superb condition. Free from any damage or notable wear to the bolsters the leather remains feeling supple throughout. The black and red combo extends to the door cards and centre console, all in particularly fine order with no scratches or marking to the delicate trim. Pleasingly the original cassette radio is still fitted, and commonly worn items such as the steering wheel show almost no signs of any use. The carpets are perfectly clean throughout and are protected in the footwells by the original set of black overmats. The boot area is also spotlessly clean and still home to the BMW CD changer.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Being an earlier example, this M Roadster is equipped with the brilliant S50 straight-six that produces an impressive 317hp. With no kind of electronic traction or stability control system, it is certainly not for the faint-hearted. On test, the slick 5-speed manual gearbox remains feeling tight and precise, handling the engine’s power perfectly. The car was most recently serviced (Inspection I) in June 2020 at the current mileage of 23,500. Since arriving at 4 Star we have also had the car fully inspected and MOT’d for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 17-inch M RoadStar alloys fill the arches perfectly, the deep rear dish giving the Z3 a very broad and aggressive stance. The wheels present in fine order with no unsightly curb marking to speak of. They are wrapped in a matching set of premium Bridgestone Potenza tyres with ample tread remaining. Following inspection the front brake discs and pads have just been replaced at the current mileage with genuine BMW parts.

History File

This rare Imola Red example was supplied new by David Prentice Cars Limited in April 1998. It received its all-important running-in inspection at 1,235 miles and has now covered a total of just 23k miles in the hands of only three careful owners. It was purchased by the current owner in 2014, the previous owner having bought it from BMW way back in December 2000.

When not in use this stunning example has always been stored correctly, which is evident not only from the fantastic condition of the paintwork and roof, but also of the interior and underside (additional photos available upon request). Despite its low mileage the car has been serviced at close mileage intervals, which are as follows: 1k, 6k, 13k, 21k, 22k, 22k, 23k, and most recently again at 23k miles in June 2020, which was an Inspection I. We have also just had the car fully inspected and MOT’d, with new brake pads and discs fitted at the front.

About BMW

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
