Mercedes-Benz 220a/S/SE Ponton (219 Ponton W105) 1959

General description : SpecificThis specific 219 sedan has a gorgeous grey color and matching interior which accompanies the 50’s body shape perfectly. It was built in 1959, the last production year of the model. Ths car had been restored in the nineties, and as you can see, the car has been properly maintained ever since. The original Webasto sliding sunroof is made of Covertex (vinyl). Because of that quality, the 219 belongs to the rare 105.011 series, instead of the basic 105.010 line.

A lot of documentation is available by this car. During the restoration in the 90’s, the engine has also been overhauled.

GeneralMercedes-Benz started producing the Ponton line after the Second World War, in March 1953. Cars of this family showed a totally different, distinct, and far more modern look to celebrate the end of the war. A typical feature of the Ponton line was the round and more aerodynamic body shape of the models, derived from a post war styling trend of the same name, which was gaining popularity in all sorts of products at the time. This specific Ponton car, the W105, was marketed as the 219 and built to fit in the luxury car segment. The 219 became a 2.2 litre engine, with 6 cylinders in line. This engine had been used in a previous model, the 220a, which basically was a W180 with 7 centimetres added to accommodate the 2 extra cylindres for the 220a. From the a-pillar forward, the 219 looked like the 220a. To produce the rear however, Mercedes took the short body of the W180/W190 models to give the car a modern look. On the inside, the 219 looks simple, yet stylish with small instruments. Bakelite instead of traditional wood grain was used to decorate and to contribute to the new way of styling. Furthermore, the vehicle became an uni body construction with sheet steel around it and weighs 1,290 kilograms without passengers or cargo. The engine delivers 85 horsepower and 157 N-m of torque, which allows the car to go up to 148 kilometres per hour.
