General description : 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS
VIN WP0ZZZ96ZNS491080, engine no. 62N81699
Grand Prix White with Black Leather

With its distinctive profile, iconic rear engine character, and memorable performance, the Porsche 911 remains one of the most sought-after sports cars. Whether sought after as a classic 911 or a contemporary offering, the design purity, race-bred lineage, and vigilant engineering improvements have always delivered a range of innovative and exciting performance cars, but only a few of which evoke the 911 heritage architecture. Originally released in 1973, the first 911 RS was available only as a European model. The designator “RS” – German for ‘Rennsport’ or ‘Race Sport’ is traditionally reserved for the highest performance Porsches. In 1992, Porsche produced a super-lightweight, rear-wheel drive version of the 964, dubbed the Carrera RS. Exclusive only to the European market, the RS was a no frills, minimalist performance car with lightweight construction and specialized equipment offered to race-minded enthusiasts who had grown tired of heavily optioned performance cars. The Porsche Carrera RS was nothing short of a race car for the street, and even Porsche themselves were not shy about bragging so when the car was first released.

Based on the 911 Carrera Cup race car, the new RS captured all the motorsports prestige and power of the 2.7 and 3.0 RS and RSR models from Porsche history. The M64/03 engine offered increased horsepower of 260bhp, with a lightweight flywheel coupled to the G50/10 close ratio steel synchromesh 5-speed transmission, and asymmetrical Limited Slip Differential. The track inspired suspension included 1.6” lower ride height, stiffer springs, shocks and adjustable stabilizer bars, and no power steering. Further specialized details included a stripped-down interior with no power windows or seats, no air conditioning or cruise control, no sound system or sound deadening, and racing style Recaro bucket seats. To further enhance the RS package, the engine lid was made of aluminum, 7.5” and 9” magnesium wheels were used, door and rear glass was thinner, and the chassis seam welded, all this, in an effort to reduce weight. The final dry weight of the car was trimmed to less than 2,700 pounds. In keeping with the highly prized performance features of the RS production was limited to a mere 1,992 examples, all of which were dedicated to European markets.

Although never sold in the US, the anniversary allowing import of European market cars having passed a few years ago, astute collectors are now realizing how much these cars offer, particularly as more enthusiasts crave the dynamic feel of the road, the immediacy of the track-inspired suspension, the brisk power delivery, and manual gearbox. Indeed, all these features combine perfectly in the Carrera RS, making it one of the last Porsche models emblematic of the original 911 design and yet very much a modern performance car.

According to records accompanying the car, this Carrera RS was delivered new to the first owner, Giancarlo Pontillo, Torino, Italy, indicated by Italian ownership records accompanying the car and further supported by the Italian language owner’s manuals and handwritten information filled out in the owner’s book, including the original engine number 62N81699, which matches the engine in the car. The first owner had the car serviced regularly as indicated by entries in the maintenance section of the owner’s manual showing a 1992 Porsche dealer service at 2290 kms. In 1993, the car was recall serviced by Porsche for electrical system fuse and circuit breaker correction. A 2006 service with 30,746 kms and a 2009 service with 33,703 kms were also recorded. In 2013 Porsche dealer service in Italy with 35,438 kms for extensive service was performed including the following service work was performed at the Padova, Italy Porsche dealership: Labor for engine removal to replace the clutch plate, flywheel surfacing, replace spark plugs, adjust the valves, turn the front and rear brake rotors, and replace the front and rear brake pads. Service included flushing the brake and clutch fluids and replacement of heat protection screws. The front and rear shock absorber height was adjusted, and the right headlight glass cover was replaced.

Shortly thereafter, the car was sold to the second owner in Germany, also supported by German ownership documents accompanying the car. The next service entry, a 2017 Porsche dealer service (performed in Munster, Germany) with 36,293 kms is also recorded in the service record book. Additional services were performed on the car through 2017 while in Germany including an annual maintenance with oil change, fluids, inspection, and professional detailing. On or about this time, some areas of the front of the car were sensitively painted to improve the cosmetic appearance attributed to stone chips. Recent digital paint meter readings returned numbers in the 4-6 micron range, with some areas on the hood ranging 7-9 microns. Certainly, the front bumper was repainted and quite possibly small areas of the hood have been very smoothly blended when the cosmetic paint work was performed. On April 12, 2018 a US purchase for the state of Florida was recorded, then registered, and titled, on April 18, 2018 in Miami, Florida. Later that year the car was purchased and transferred to Montana and subsequently to the current owners in January 2019.

Exhibiting all the traits of a premium performance offering, today the overall look and feel of this Carrera RS is purposeful and distinctive, ready to live up to the 911 heritage and Rennsport performance moniker it so rightly deserves. The exterior presents beautifully with a smooth and glossy white finish that has been exceptionally well preserved throughout. There is a small chip on the right side of the rear bumper, and a few very minor road chips on the front bumper and lower air dam, but otherwise, the condition of the paint is excellent overall, indicating this wonderfully maintained Porsche has been thoughtfully enjoyed yet clearly protected from harsh conditions. The body is in excellent condition showing precision factory door, trunk, and hood gaps, exceptional fit along the front and rear bumpers, with superb trim, excellent lenses, and original factory glass. The wheels are in very fine condition with no curb rash and beautiful silver finish. Upon close examination the wheels reveal the “magnesium” lettering cast into each specialized rim. The overall look and feel of this car are all the more dramatic, with the contrasting signature 911 tinted glass silhouetted against the white body lines. This distinct and quintessential Porsche 911, sits ready, hunkered down, void of flared-fender audacity, a jutting rear spoiler, or excessive graphics; pure and cleanly stated with elegant authority. All the bravado and power casually tipped by black script “Carrera RS” on the engine lid, indicating in just two words, to those aware of Porsche history, just how fiercely capable this rare car truly is.

The original interior shows minimal wear, with excellent tri-color gray and black leather seat inserts and leatherette finishes throughout the interior. The lightweight Recaro racing-style bucket seats have excellent finishes on all panels and offer firm support without compromising comfort. The door panels, including door pulls and upper door trim are in very nice condition, essentially as new, showing almost no evidence revealing their 25-year age. Even the weight saving window cranks work smoothly when lowering the side glass. The center console is simple and clear, dedicated only to the 5-speed manual shifter and a hand brake, both of which are in excellent cosmetic condition. The carpeting shows some evidence of use primarily along the side footwell areas, with the floor carpeting having been protected by factory floor mats, which show signs of typical use. The rear carpeted area appears as new, particularly where the red Carrera RS script has been embroidered into the storage area. The dashboard, gorgeous instruments, and accessory panel are in near new condition with all switches operating as expected. The interior is finished off by a matching black steering wheel with subtle RS script embossed into the center. The headliner, sun visors, and control surfaces are all uniformly crisp and carefully preserved. The fit and finish of the interior is fresh, cohesive, and, while thematically spartan, presents an aura of refinement and sporting elegance that only Porsche can so effectively deliver.

The engine compartment and trunk are both unmodified and in very fine condition. The original engine appears correct and properly maintained with clean, detailed factory molded intake components, completing an exceptionally clean engine compartment. Clear factory engine labels, proper wiring, and the correct engine number is clearly visible on the original engine casting. The trunk is, once again, as new, offering exceptionally fine original materials and factory finishes including proper black molded components, factory treated metal parts, and correct hardware. The undercarriage further supports the low miles and diligent care this car has received, showing a clean and dry undercarriage with very little evidence of use. Components are factory correct wtih no visual evidence of structural compromise to the floor pan or visible portions of the substructure.

The car starts instantly with the clutch, brakes, and gearbox working in perfect harmony, owing in part to the low miles and recent brake and clutch work performed on this rare and desirable Carrera RS. The motor provides a wonderful induction roar, revealing genuinely remarkable performance, even by modern standards. The track-inspired suspension, slightly lowered per RS specifications, conveys the distinctive 911 character further enhanced by the Rennsport ethos, particularly when cornering under power. The large ventilated disc brakes offer a firm pedal, being easily modulated, delivering a very intuitive racing-feel for a road car. The chassis is composed, tight, and authentic, exactly as you might expect when driving this car; delivering an exemplary Rennsport signature to one of the finest road cars Porsche has ever delivered.

The car comes with a complete set of factory books, owner’s manual, 2 original keys, and a battery tender. Documentation includes assorted Italian and German ownership documents, select service records, and a current Carfax.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a low mileage, well maintained, US titled example of one of Porsche’s most desirable 911 performance models ever built. One of just 1,992 built, and offering exceptional cosmetics with remarkable performance, this Porsche 911 Carrera RS is ready for enjoyable driving, showing, or simply admiring as the last of the great air-cooled engineering marvels of the 20th century.

As a 49-State car, this example is available to all Non-California State residents or a licensed California dealer.

About Porsche 911 / 964
The Porsche 964 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 models produced between 1989 and 1994. It was the successor to the Porsche 3.2 Carrera and was designed to be a more refined and modern version of the classic Porsche 911.

One of the major changes in the 964 was the introduction of an all-wheel-drive system, called the Carrera 4. The 964 was also the first Porsche 911 to feature power steering, anti-lock brakes, and an airbag as standard equipment. In addition, the suspension was updated to provide a smoother ride and better handling.

The 964 was powered by a range of engines, including a 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six, a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, and a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six. The top-of-the-line 964 Turbo S was capable of producing 385 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the fastest production cars of its time.

Today, the Porsche 964 is considered a classic sports car and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. While it may not have the same level of performance as some of the newer Porsche 911 models, the 964 is still a thrilling car to drive and offers a unique driving experience that is difficult to replicate with modern cars.

As a hobbyist car, the Porsche 964 is popular among collectors and enthusiasts who enjoy working on and restoring classic cars. Its relatively simple design and mechanics make it a good choice for those who are interested in learning about automotive restoration and maintenance.

Overall, the Porsche 964 is an important part of Porsche's history and remains a beloved car among automotive enthusiasts around the world. Its unique combination of classic styling, modern features, and high performance capabilities make it a true icon of the Porsche brand.
