Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider 1990

General description : An iconic GT Turbo Raider with just 52k miles from new.

MODEL HISTORY

Hot hatches are amongst the best things to come out of the 80's and one of the greatest was the Renault 5 Turbo. Launched in the UK in 1986 the model remained largely unchanged until 1991. With sporting heritage from Alpine and Gordini, the GT Turbo was always going to be a good drivers car but few were prepared for the little Renault's scorching performance.

Using turbo technology from the original 5 Turbo, Renault's new GT turbo had the same 1397cc Inline 4, carbureted by a single Solex blown through by a Garrett T2 turbocharger. The engine developed 118bhp at 5750rpm and there was a very usable 121lb ft of torque at 3000rpm. All this power and a body that only weighed only 830kg gave it a blistering 0-60mph time of 7.3 secs and the quarter mile in an impressive 15.8 secs.

Renault's engineers took care to make sure the car handled as well as it went. Negative offset front suspension was complimented by trailing arm/transverse torsion bar rear suspension. Power was delivered to the road through a 5 speed gearbox and braking was all round servo assisted discs. Sharp rack and pinion steering completed the cocktail that was universally praised and christened 'The Pocket Rocket'.

Equipment

Central locking, Alarm, Immobiliser, Kenwood CD with iPod connectivity, Electric windows, Interior central locking control, Front fog lights, Heated rear screen, Digital clock, Spare key.

EXTERIOR

Being the special edition Raider, this Renault 5 comes in the desirable Sport Blue metallic paintwork that gleams in our studio following a lengthy detailing session. The paintwork is in excellent condition and is free from any scuffs or major scratches, with all panels very straight aside from one unobtrusive car park dent on the NSR wheel arch.

All of the plastic trim on the car has retained its colour and is in great order, with the original body kit as fresh as the day it left the factory. Furthermore every lens is crystal clear and crack-free, with the ‘RAIDER' decal still present at the top of the rear window.

INTERIOR

The Renault has bucketed grey cloth seats in the front for extra support; both front and rear are in fantastic condition with no wear to the side bolsters. The foam padding is in good order, still plump and very supportive, with just a tiny nick to the fabric in the middle of the rear bench.

The black carpet is spotless throughout with the dashboard and centre console completely unmarked. The grey corduroy door cards present very well plus the steering wheel and gear knob both retain a good texture. All the switch gear still works and feels like new with precise and firm clicks when moving stalks or buttons.

The car has been fitted with a more recent Kenwood CD player that is coupled with an iPod cable, discreetly fitted from within the glove compartment. Two aftermarket tweeters have also been fitted atop the dashboard, but could easily be removed should the new owner wish to return the interior back to its original state.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This GT Turbo has done less than 52k miles and as such the engine bay is in remarkably good order. All rubbers and plastics appear very tidy indeed, with the engine itself in fine fettle having just had the head gasket replaced by our team of technicians, following its full mechanical inspection.

The gearshift mechanism is incredibly tight and precise showing making this iconic hatch a very enjoyable car to drive.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on its factory set of 13" colour-coded Raider alloy wheels which are all completely unmarked. There are zero signs of curb damage or age-related wear to the polished outer rims.

The wheels are shod in a matching set of Uniroyal tyres, each with plenty of tread. The brakes all work well pulling the car up smoothly in a straight line.

HISTORY FILE

This example has covered just 51,835 miles in its life and is complemented by a wealth of paperwork, ranging from original Renault service invoices to more recent bills and receipts for parts, as well as MOT certificates.

The original service book is stamped up to 46,784 miles and is complete with the plastic book pack that includes all the correct handbooks. Full documentation for the alarm and immobiliser is also present.

About Renault
Ah, Renault, a name that's as French as a croissant and as ingrained in automotive history as a baguette in a Parisian café. Let's take a leisurely drive through the annals of this storied manufacturer, shall we?

Our story begins in the late 19th century when the Renault brothers, Louis, Marcel, and Fernand, decided to put their inventive minds to work. In 1898, they introduced their very first car, the Renault Voiturette. It was a petite, rear-engined contraption that looked like something Jules Verne might have designed. This pint-sized pioneer laid the foundation for Renault's automotive legacy.

Now, if we're talking about influential Renault models, we mustn't overlook the Renault 4. Launched in 1961, it was the French answer to the Volkswagen Beetle. The Renault 4 was practical, versatile, and designed to handle the rough and tumble of rural France. It was as much at home in the city as it was on a farm, a true embodiment of French pragmatism.

But let's not forget the Renault 5, or "Le Supercinq" as it was known in France. Introduced in the mid-'70s, this little hatchback was a design sensation. Its quirky, angular lines and cheeky personality made it an instant hit. It was economical, fun to drive, and became an icon of French urban life.

Then came the Renault Espace in 1984. It was one of the pioneers of the MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) segment. The Espace was designed for families who wanted the practicality of a van without sacrificing the comfort of a car. It was the beginning of a new era in family transport.

And let's not forget the Renault Twingo, introduced in 1992. It was a small city car that broke the mold with its innovative design and rear-engine layout. The Twingo was proof that small cars could be stylish and practical, and it was a hit with urban dwellers across Europe.

Now, if you want to talk about a true game-changer, it's the Renault Clio. First introduced in 1990, the Clio became a European favorite. It combined style, performance, and affordability in a way that few cars could match. It's the kind of car that's as comfortable on the Champs-Élysées as it is navigating the narrow streets of a French village.

But, of course, we can't forget the Renault Megane. It's been a stalwart of the compact car segment since its debut in 1995. With its distinctive rear-end design and a range of engines to suit every taste, the Megane has remained a strong contender in a competitive market.

So there you have it, a leisurely tour through the history of Renault, a company that has always managed to infuse a touch of French flair into the automotive world. Renault has given us cars that are as diverse as the French countryside itself, from practical workhorses to stylish city slickers. It's a brand that's as much a part of France's cultural tapestry as a bottle of Bordeaux or a game of pétanque. Vive la Renault!
