Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 1978

General description : Certain trucks have built a well-deserved reputation for being tough, virtually unbreakable workhorses. Through solid engineering and fresh innovation, names like Ford, Chevrolet, Ram and Toyota have been a dominant force in the world's largest automotive markets for close to a century. With that in mind, demand for classic trucks and SUVs has never been hotter. And that means, after a lifetime of dedicated service, more and more of these gladiators are being retired to dry garages and leisurely show fields. One such stalwart is this slick FJ40. The beneficiary of comprehensive restoration, this awesome ute wraps utilitarian aesthetics and proven 2F 6-cylinder power in a tough platform that makes it a perfect candidate for miles of parade and years of display. If you're in the market for a standout classic, settle in and take a closer look at this sweet Land Cruiser!
BODYWORK/TRIM
As far as styling goes, few vehicles have aged better than old school SUVs. And by 1978, Toyota's Land Cruiser had been refined to such a degree that it remains a head-turner even by today's standards. To ensure the exterior fit and finish of this FJ was show quality, all panels were taken to bare metal, massaged to perfection, and shot with a glossy coat of Mustard Yellow 2-stage. A little more manic than the grays, reds and greens Land Cruisers usually sport, this pigment absolutely sets off the truck's buff profile. Panel fitment is good, all gaps are even, and the doors and hood shut easily. And it all adds up to one head-turning classic that consistently provides instant red carpet curb appeal!
ENGINE
Pop the hood and you'll find a reliable Toyota 2F 6-cylinder that's been carefully rebuilt and thoroughly dressed. Revs are created when a remote air cleaner floats wind in to a cast, factory intake, by way of a fresh Aisan carburetor. At the perimeter of that intake, a bright valve cover hangs a vivid '2F' decal over a cast, factory exhaust manifold. Opposite those tubes, a trusty points distributor shoots spark through premium Olimpic plug wires. In front of those cables, a beefy radiator centers a metal shroud in front of factory pulleys. And, aesthetically, the tidy mill looks clean, sorted and ready to roll.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Built to mimic America's hella tough Jeep, this old school SUV features part-time 4-wheel drive and enough ground clearance to give new meaning to the phrase 'stump jumper'. Like its engine, the truck's rugged 4-speed and factory differentials were completely overhauled during the comprehensive restoration. Power-assisted drums ensure stops are brief and confidence-inspiring. The truck's chassis rides a restored, solid-axle suspension. Factory replacement pipes shuttle spent gases through a mid-mount muffler. And at the corners of the floor, gray steelies spin 31x10.50R15 Tornel A/T-09 Radials around quality AVM hubs and bright stainless center caps.
INTERIOR
Swivel this cool truck's lightweight doors and you'll find a comfy leather interior that seems like a great place to survey the trail. Front and center, a duo of yellow-stitched buckets lead a duo of yellow-stitched benches. In front of those thrones, a silver-trimmed dash hangs a CD player between rebuilt telemetry, compact heat and controls for H4 headlights. Beneath that dash, fade-free vinyl frames a duo of correct shifters. A clean headliner serves a nice contrast to the truck's color-keyed door panels. And the driver tames the gravel through a larger, Toyota-branded steering wheel.

About Toyota
Toyota, a name that has become synonymous with reliability and sensibility in the world of automobiles. Let's take a leisurely stroll through the history of this remarkable Japanese marque.

Our story begins in the late 1930s when a modest textile machinery company, Toyota Industries, decided to dip its toes into the world of automobiles. It was a humble beginning, but little did they know that they were about to embark on a journey that would change the automotive landscape forever.

Fast forward to 1957, and we have the introduction of the Toyota Crown, a car that signaled Toyota's ambitions to compete on the global stage. It was sensible, well-built, and it set the tone for what Toyota would become known for - reliability.

But if we're talking about Toyota's foray into the world of high-performance sports cars, we can't ignore the Toyota 2000GT. Introduced in 1967, it was a thing of beauty. Sleek, low-slung, and powered by a silky-smooth inline-six engine. It was Japan's answer to the European sports car establishment, and it put Toyota on the map as a builder of more than just sensible family cars.

Then came the Toyota Celica in the 1970s, a sporty compact coupe that captured the hearts of many. It was affordable, fun to drive, and it helped establish Toyota's reputation for building cars that were both practical and enjoyable.

But if we're talking about Japanese sports cars that made a statement, the Toyota Supra deserves a special mention. First introduced in 1978, it became a legend in its own right. With its powerful inline-six engines and rear-wheel drive, it was a force to be reckoned with on both the street and the track. The Supra is a car that enthusiasts still drool over, even today.

And then, there's the Land Cruiser. It's not just an off-roader; it's an off-roader that can do anything a Land Rover used to do, only better. Introduced in the 1950s, it quickly gained a reputation for being virtually indestructible. Whether it's crossing deserts, jungles, or frozen tundras, the Land Cruiser can handle it with ease.

But perhaps Toyota's most significant achievement is its commitment to reliability and sensibility. They didn't just build cars; they built cars that people could depend on day in and day out. It's no surprise that you see Toyota's on the streets of every corner of the world, from Tokyo to Timbuktu.

So, there you have it, the history of Toyota, a company that started humbly but grew to become a global giant in the automotive industry. They've given us reliable, sensible cars, but they've also shown that they can build high-performance legends and off-roaders that conquer the toughest terrain. Toyota is a brand that proves you can have your sensible cake and eat it with a sprinkle of excitement on top.
