Volvo PV544 544 B18 '63 1963

General description : The PV 544 was not really a new car but rather an evolution of the PV 444, the design of which dates from the 1940s, and which was offered for sale from 1947. The PV 544, which succeeded in 1958, benefits from larger glass surfaces and a domed windshield. The interior has been completely revised with a padded dashboard, a so-called safety direction to improve occupant protection. The headlights at the rear have been redesigned and the brakes improved. In the Swedish market, the car was available in four versions: 544-03 Standard, 544-04 Special II, 544-05 Special I and 544-06 Sport. The Sport was the sportiest model, the Special II was the most luxurious version. The PV 544 A was fitted with the B16B engine; The PV 544 A was the best-selling model of the entire 544 family. 99,494 were built. It was with this model that Volvo began to attack new markets. Volvo set out to conquer the American market with the PV 544. To meet its requirements, two specific models of the PV 544 A were developed: the 544-08 with the B16B engine and a 4-speed gearbox and the 544-09, a more sporty model, still with the B16B engine in a more powerful configuration and a 3-speed gearbox. In Europe, the 1600 cc was replaced in 1962 by the 1800 cc B18, an engine that would become legendary when Ivr Gordon traveled more than 3 million kilometers in his Volvo P1800 at an average of 100,000 km per year for 30 years ! The first three-point seat belts were installed in the PV544 in 1959.
