Dipatched from the Alvis works in October of 1934, chassis number 11939 was fitted with a Drophead Coupé body by Noted Coachbuilders Vanden Plas. Later in the cars life this was cut down to convert the car to a tourer configuration as we find it today. The original Vanden Plas Sill plates are still in situ. The car thus retains its original body modified to 4 seat tourer configuration with cut down doors etc.
Finished in Old English white with red wire wheels the paintwork is from the restoration done a couple of decades ago & shows a light patina of use accumulated over the years but is very presentable rather then brand new. A full rewire was undertaken & a new radiator fabricated. More recently the engine has ben rebuilt & new rear hubs & drive shafts fitted. A huge history file comes with the car containng copious & exhaustive bills detailing the many works done to the car in recent years.
The car is on the button starting easily & showing a surprising turn of performance. An Overdrive has also been fitted operating in both third & fourth gears making the car very flexible & long legged in gait easily running in modern traffic. New piston rings, valves & valve guides were fitted in 2006 by marque speciaists Red Triangle. The gear box is up to the usual per war Alvis standards with synchromesh on all gears allowing for seamless changes.
To the interior is lightly patinated red leather along with red carpets. A full length black mohair hood is also fitted & is in perfect like new condition, erected easily by one person in just a few moments. The windshield folds flat allowing for a full on 'Bugs in the teeth" motoring experience. Not unlike an SS100 in appearance, the car affords plenty or room to the driver & occupants being both spacious & comfortable. Fast by pre war standards these Alvis Speed 20's really embody the quintessential essence of the pre war british sports car.
