It's time to enjoy a car for the purists. This 1964 Austin Healey Sprite Mk II is iconic classic British roaster fun on a budget.
This is for sure the best Healey Sprite for certain people. The second-generation styling was a nice rework to a more conventional body, but the owner could still remove the roof, side curtains and the windshield to shed weight for racing, or for a sunny day cruise. The end product was a roadster that was less mainstream (and more rare) than its MG relative, but a less polarizing design than the Mk I's "frogeye" look. The blue vinyl top might be for temporary use, but it's striking against the coordinating light blue paintwork. That beautiful hue looks particularly impressive because of a recent professional application that makes this sunshine car shine even brighter. The paint may have been applied recenty, but it's an iconic shade for these Healeys, which makes this car appear pristinely original, right down to its factory "AH" hubcaps.
Inside is another festival of two-tone blue. The dual bucket seats are there to provide some individual comfort, and there's a heater for everyone, but we all know this is really a driver-focused roadster. That's why you get a no-nonsense grippy steering wheel, and beyond that are clear Smiths gauges. This one doesn't need a center console because your right hand rests perfectly and naturally on the gearshift.
The Sprite truly lived up to its name. This gives up luxuries like roll-up windows to be lightest of the non-frogeyes by a wide margin. This allows you to get the most performance out of the 1098cc four-cylinder motor. In fact, this is the larger of the two offered in the Mk II, and it even has a double-barrel Webber carburetor. So the Sprite has spirited performance. Combine this with the close ratio four-speed manual transmission, and you begin to understand why people love these cars. After all, there's no better feeling than rowing through the gears at the exact right time to stay in the powerband. And you can do that with confidence, because this BMC A-series motor has been rebuilt with care. The last key to the Sprite being so good on the backroads is its unibody construction. It was revolutionary for a road car at the time, and it keeps the featherweight body nice and stiff in the turns. It even handles quite nicely thanks to front disc brakes and modern Kumho tires at all four corners.
