The Eldorado has a history behind it, from the time it was introduced by Cadillac as its full-size personal luxury car in 1952, until it was replaced by the Cadillac CTS in 2002. During its lifespan, the Eldorado's primary competitors were the Lincoln Mark series, the Buick Riviera, the Oldsmobile Toronado, and the Chrysler Imperial Crown Coupe; all of which regularly finished behind the Eldorado in unit sales during their lifespans. The Eldorado received its final facelift in 1992, when the tenth generation was introduced, drawing from both interior and exterior styling elements introduced with Cadillac's 1988 Solitaire concept car. It was significantly larger than its predecessor - approximately 11" longer, 3" wider, and substantially heavier. Window glass was once again frameless, and shortly after its introduction, Cadillac's new NorthStar V8 became available, replacing the 200 hp 4.9 L. The Eldorado continued for the rest of the decade with incremental changes and tapering sales. A passenger side airbag was added as standard equipment in 1993. The 4.6L NorthStar V8 is what powers this Caddy and the four-speed automatic transmission finds its way through the gears with ease.
