Porsche 911 / 964 Carrera Sport Convertible (G50) 1989

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

Instantly recognizable, the 911 design can be traced back the original sketches drawn by Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche in 1959. The first Porsche 911 was developed as a more powerful, larger, comfortable replacement for the company's first model, the Porsche 356. Originally named the Porsche 901 but quickly changed as Peugeot protested holding the exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. Porsche decided instead of selling the new model with an alternative name in France, they simply changed the name to 911. Since 1964 the 911 model proved to be a huge success, with models such as the Carrera RS, 911 Carrera 2.7, 911 SC and the 911 Turbo.
1984 saw the launch of the 911 Carrera 3.2, which was a replacement for the successful SC series. The 3.2 Carrera revived the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. It utilised a new higher-displacement 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat-6 engine, which used higher domed pistons to increase the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1. It was also fitted with a new inlet manifold and exhaust system, Bosch Motronic management system and Bosch LE-Jetronic system. Stronger Hydraulic tensioners for the cam chains were also replaced. In 1987, the Carrera received a new five-speed G50 gearbox sourced from Getrag, with proven BorgWarner synchronizers. From October 1986, changes in the fuel map and chip re-programming further helped improve the power from 207 to 217hp.

Three Carrera models were available at the time – the Coupe, Targa, and Cabriolet. Almost identical in design to the earlier SC model, the Carrera received subtle cosmetic changes throughout its lifespan. Some of the more noticeable changes were the integrated front fog lights and redesigned dashboard featuring larger air conditioning vents.

Exterior

This has to be the finest 3.2 911 we’ve seen here at 4 Star. A highly original and extremely well presented example in classic Guards Red over black. Having just been treated to a full machine polish the paintwork maintains a deep lustful shine with only an honest dusting of small chips to report on very close inspection. All of the plastic trims and rubber seals remain in excellent condition with no signs of perishing or fading, and the lights are clear of any moisture, chips or cracks. The electric hood operates perfectly and is also in immaculate condition having been entirely renewed in July 2022, the invoice for this work totaling £2,690.

Interior

The interior also presents particularly well with only minimal wear to the deeply bolstered sports seats, a desirable factory option and a great complement to the exterior paintwork with the red piping. Glancing across the dash the switchgear is in fine order and pleasingly the original Blaupunkt Toronto tape player remains in place. Another nice touch is the handy storage compartment below the dash for all your favorite cassettes. The original carpets are in excellent shape having been protected by an additional set of overmats, and the door cards are immaculate too. Other commonly worn areas such as the steering wheel and gear knob appear in fine order with only a few small marks commensurate with the mileage. At the front end the luggage compartment is very tidy and still houses the original velour carpet, spare wheel, tool kit, tyre inflator kit, and factory options sticker under the bonnet.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Reading through the history file it’s clear that this stunning 3.2 911 has been maintained to an excellent standard throughout its life. The car has only recently returned from a £3,155 major service and check over with marque specialists HDPorsche Limited in Cranleigh. Out on the road it’s an absolute joy to drive; the engine pulls really well and the G50 transmission provides very smooth and precise gear changes – and of course it sounds fantastic with the roof down.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The forged Fuchs wheels remain in perfect unmarked condition having previously been refurbished in the correct finish and to the highest standard. They are wrapped in premium tyres all round with Pirellis at the front and Bridgestones at the rear. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition with plenty of meat left.

History File

First registered in April 1989 this low mileage Carrera Sport was supplied new by Charles Follett Limited in London. The car has now driven only 77k miles in the hands of just 6 registered keepers. The accompanying History File comprises a large bespoke ring binder packed with invoices, MOT certificates, and various period documents. The original Porsche leather document wallet is also present along with all owners’ manuals, the stamped service booklet, operating instructions for the Blaupunkt radio, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, an original sales brochure, and the spare key with remote fob. Services have been carried out at the following mileages: 2,555 – 20,314 – 26,854 – 29,706 – 35,758 – 40,137 – 42,524 – 44,189 – 48,161 – 50,763 – 53,370 – 54,876 – 56,554 – 59,336 – 63,161 – 67,030 – 72,321 – and most recently at 77,549 miles in October 2022.
