General Overview

The Porsche Turbo 3.6 is today considered a hallmark of performance excellence, signifying the best in air-cooled Turbo refinement. The specifications are robust yet delivered in a package that could be street driven regularly with confidence and reliability. Porsche enthusiasts today favor the Turbo 3.6 for the familiar 911 greenhouse, distinct body lines, and traditional interior coupled with state of the art 3.6-liter turbocharged performance. Though foundationally similar to the original 911, the Turbo 3.6 has been prodigiously updated with a myriad of modern equipment while retaining legendary Porsche engineering and iconic design features.

Introduced in 1990, as a turbocharged version of the 964 series, initially offered with the 3.3-liter engine which would later be updated before the end of production to the highly desirable 3.6-liter displacement engine. The wide rear fenders, revised front and rear fascia, and fixed rear spoiler created a timeless blend of legacy 911 features with hints of what would come in the next century. Best of all, the incomparable roar of the definitive air-cooled Porsche engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox delivered on all the performance promises one expected from Stuttgart’s halo offering. Approximately 1,500 Turbo 3.6 models were produced in 1993/94.

According to documentation supplied by the current owner, this car was purchased new by the first owner, a resident of Berlin, Germany. The first owner retained the car until 2004 when it was sold to the second owner, a resident of Biel, Switzerland. The third owner purchased the car in 2015. The fourth and current consigning owner purchased this car from the third owner in 2022, importing it to the United States. According to the options information sticker contained in the original owner’s manual accompanying this Turbo 3.6, this car was outfitted with the following factory options:

Service stamps in the owner’s manual package indicate regular services as kilometers accrued over the years from purchase noted December 3, 1993, with the first service May 8, 1994, at 4862 kms and subsequent consecutive service entries through the 1990s and 2000s. The last handwritten notation of service was at 89,033 kms May 21, 2010, when the car was owned by the second owner in Switzerland. On September 2, 2008, the second owner delivered the car to Swiss performance specialists “Digit Power” and commissioned a comprehensive engineering package that would retain the original look and comfort of the car while delivering awesome performance. The improvements included newly designed coil over suspension improvements performed using electronic steering geometry, sports camshafts, new larger turbocharger with 8mm pressure hose, new M10 K-nuts, and a new clutch. At this time, the factory wood inserts for the dashboard were changed to carbon fiber. When completed, the car was chassis tested on the dyno resulting in 435 hp achieved at 5300 rpm. Copies of the dyno sheets and selected service invoices accompany the previous ownership documentation with this car.

Today, with 92,334 kilometers indicated, this Porsche Turbo 3.6 presents in excellent condition. The beautiful metallic blue paint displays excellent depth and high gloss throughout the exterior surface. The paint has been metered on all metal body surfaces, returning single digit numbers on two-thirds of the body panels, a third of which read higher (10-12mls). The body panels show excellent door, trunk, and hood gaps, excellent fit along the front and rear bumpers, and nicely maintained exterior trim. The front bumper and hood are in excellent condition though some underside scuff marks are evident on the air dam as well as a few minor stone chips along the rocker panels. The lenses are vivid and glossy, while glass and windshield are in excellent condition with no notable marks or chips. The multi-piece 18” Speedline silver painted wheels with polished alloy rims and Porsche crest center caps are in excellent condition, accented by red brake calipers perched over the larger Turbo brakes. A set of Michelin Pilot Sport (225/ 40ZR front and 265/35ZR rear) tires are fitted bearing late 2017/early 2018 date codes.

The Classic Grey leather interior has been very well maintained and thoughtfully preserved, showing minor evidence of use on the driver’s seat entry bolster and an excellent matching leather covered shifter boot. The pleated front and rear power/heated leather seats remain remarkably supple and smooth to the touch with correct and even seat piping. Minor wear is noted along the bottom driver’s seat edge where power adjustment buttons are located as well as typical footbox carpet wear to the driver’s side heel area. The door panels, including door pulls and door pocket lids remain in very nice condition. The matching grey dashboard, gorgeous instruments, and center console are in excellent condition with switches and features operating as expected. Carbon fiber inserts have been added to the dashboard. Of note, the 5-speed manual gearbox sits prominently within the optional leather covered center console, indicative of the original air-cooled manual gearbox combination that made the 911 such a memorable success. The headliner, sun visors, power sunroof, and control surfaces are all uniformly clean and nicely detailed. The overall fit and finish of the interior is cohesive and tidy, confirming the ongoing care this Porsche has received since being delivered new.

The engine compartment and engine are in excellent visual condition. Though modified for performance use, the original engine is correct and properly maintained with clean components and factory details evident throughout the engine compartment. Correct materials and finishes are also in place in the front storage area including the collapsible red-rim spare tire, correct and original front storage liner, factory treated metal parts, factory paint sticker indicating Midnight Blue Metallic and correct hardware. The chassis displays generally clean components and authentic finishes reflecting enjoyable use and proper care. The floor pan, rocker panels, and structure show no visual evidence of structural compromise.

The car starts instantly with a delightful, air-cooled resonance that only a Turbocharged Porsche engine can deliver. As noted, this car has received considerable performance upgrades which, when driven in a conservative way, exhibits all the traits of a competent and otherwise agreeable road car. However, the loping idle gives a slight hint as to the capacities of this car. Throttle response is docile in the 1500-3500 range, however even experienced drivers will find the power to be immediate at 4-5k rpm with monstrous liftoff and epic delivery. Brakes and gearbox all function very well but with 435 hp on tap, even capable drivers are advised to remain highly engaged. Given the right amount of space and safe distances this car will consume enormous amounts of roadway without hesitation and then return to idle at rest while awaiting the next opportunity to launch.

This Porsche Turbo 3.6 comes with a set of factory books and leather case, two black floor mats, an air compressor, tool roll with assorted tools tire pressure gauge and tow hook, a spare fan belt, a factory jack, safety triangle in plastic case, copies of ownership documents including first and second owners, and two sets of keys.

This Porsche Turbo 3.6 is an excellent example of one of the most desirable air-cooled ambassadors of the 911 lineage carefully enhanced by performance specialists taking advantage of the 3.6-liter capacity concealed in the stock Porsche design. One of 1,500 built, the excellent cosmetics, unmistakable performance, and rarity of this Turbo 3.6 makes it the ideal sports car for enthusiasts who enjoy driving their cars, showing them with pride, and sharing the unforgettable 911 magic that continues to define the remarkable Porsche lineage.
