Porsche 911 Supersport (G50) 1987

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

The Porsche 911 Supersport – aka the SSE or Turbo-Look model – was first introduced in 1984. Originally only available in coupe form the Supersport provided a solution that made sense for people who wanted a Turbo without buying a car that wanted to kill them – at that time the 930 Turbo was nicknamed the Widow Maker, and for very good reason.

Taking the standard Carrera model and then adding the Turbo’s wide-body, spoilers, suspension, four-piston calipers, 16-inch forged alloy rims and low profile tyres, etc. added around 27,950 Deutschemarks to the price of the car, making the 911 Supersport about as expensive as the Turbo itself!

The Supersport was the ultimate version of the 3.2 Carrera as an all-round car. Initially this special M491 (Turbo-Look) option was only available on coupe models, and had to be ordered through the Porsche ‘Special Wishes’ program. As sales boomed across the globe these special production cars became official and extended to include the Targa and Cabriolet in 1985. It was in an official model available from dealers in 1986 and all cars built from 1986 have M491 shown in their option codes.

Exterior

This rare UK-supplied 3.2 Supersport looks simply fantastic in no-nonsense black on black. Having just been treated to a full machine polish on arrival with us the body displays a deep shine that’s free from any unsightly swirls or major scratches. Even on close inspection the paintwork holds up very nicely with only a few small age-related marks, light frontal stone chips, and discreetly touched-in blemishes to report. All the rubbers are in generally great condition with no signs of perishing, the panel gaps are spot-on, and the lights are clear and damage-free all round including the rear reflector. The car has never been fully restored and remains in excellent original condition.

Interior

The factory spec’d Sports seats remain in great order with only a small amount of wrinkling but no significant wear and absolutely no damage to the deeply supportive bolsters. The complementing black door cards are also in excellent condition and the steering wheel retains a lovely textured finish to the leather. The dash top is without any scuffs or sun damage and the carpets are all free from any stains or signs of heavy use. A period-correct Blaupunkt head unit is fitted and the car also benefits from the rare climate control option (M559).

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The air-cooled 3.2 fires up with that distinctive flat six roar and sounds great through the dual exit exhaust. Lifting the rear lid the engine bay is very clean and tidy, not overly dressed but in fine original condition with no signs of any damage or previous poor repair. The car was last serviced in February 2023 at 111,996 miles and an engine rebuild was carried out in 2008 at circa 96k miles. On test the car feels sound, tight and responsive with excellent power delivery. The desirable G50 gearbox is also very smooth and precise to operate.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Supersport sits on 16-inch forged Fuchs rims, all in perfect unmarked condition having previously been refurbished to the highest standard with the correct anodized finish. They are shod in a matching set of Pirelli PZero Rosso tyres with 6mm of tread left front and rear; all are date stamped 2021. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition. The front discs and pads were renewed at 110,573 miles and the brake fluid was most recently changed in February this year.

History File

This fabulous G50 example is one of only a small number of bonafide Supersport coupes ever supplied to the UK. It has now driven a touch over 112k miles in the hands of 8 registered keepers. The current owner is a serious Porsche collector and purchased this one back in 2015 after a positive inspection by Peter Morgan Consulting (Porsche Inspections). A small amount of remedial work was then carried out to bring the car up to the excellent standard in which it now presents.

For the new keeper’s peace of mind we have just had the car fully inspected by our trusted classic car specialists and everything remains in fine fettle. The underside was also checked and was found to be in excellent original condition with no rust issues or oil leaks to report (photos available). A limited amount of paperwork is present with the car but the condition really speaks for itself.
