The Triumph TR6 is one of the last great British roadsters. It combines the features we enjoy such as a lively six-cylinder motor, fully independent suspension, and a full interior. But it doesn't betray the sprightly nature that makes us fall in love on the backroads. Best of all, the detailed restoration work has already been done on this one, so you're looking at a turn-key smile machine.
We often see these drop tops in red, green, or white, so it's distinctively nice to see this Triumph in a glossy regal shade of factory-correct Delft Blue (Code 136). It has a terrific luster, which is exactly what you want on a sunshine-friendly droptop. For many of us in the USA, the TR6 seems to be the one really built for us. The design was a continued evolution of the TR series, but now it had more muscular fender lines. But there was also no mistaking its heritage with a flat Kamm-back treatment that was also seen on the larger Triumphs of the day. And what you'll really love about this one are the details. The Hella fog lights are a cool classic addition, and that luggage rack just seems to be calling out for a classic wicker picnic basket. Plus, the way the red line in the grille coordinates with the redline tires is a masterstroke.
The interior is another hallmark of the great British roadster, which is why it's nice to see so much invested in the restoration. The real wood dashboard, wheel rim, and shift knob have all been given a fine lacquer finish that gives an instant feeling of craftsmanship. Plus, the full set of Smiths gauges really lets you know you're driving a European sports machine. The upgraded saddle tan on the seats, door panels, and convertible boot look terrific against the exterior blue. And for those times when you get caught out in a little rain, there's rollup windows and a snug-fitting black vinyl folding roof to keep the weather out.
British roadsters are often known for their fun on the road despite being typically underpowered. That's why the TR6 is so coveted. It has a 2.5-liter inline-six back by dual Stromberg carburetors. In fact, this is one of the larger motors out of the iconic era of sprightly roadsters, so it doesn't suffer from an anemic reputation. You can tell plenty was invested here, because of the crisp setup and all the correct decals. In a car that weighs barely 2,500 lbs, the motor has quick acceleration and the power to keep pulling well into highway speeds. Part of this versatility comes from the control you get from the four-speed manual transmission and stopping power of front disc brakes. Take the long way home, and you'll instantly fall in love with the way the sport suspension handles in this lightweight roadster. And take some time to view this in the undercarriage photos.
