In 1923 E.C. Gordon England developed and built a small racing car based on Austin Seven Parts which he successfully raced at Brooklands in the JCC 200 Mile Race of October that year. Very attractive replicas were then made available to the public to meet the demand for a small sports racing car built on the popular Austin Seven chassis and these were marketed as the Brooklands Super Sports from 1924.
Early examples had a fabric covering, but the polished aluminium body with pointed tail and streamlined fairings soon evolved. Prices were high, costing from £265 without wings and windscreen to £505 fully equipped in 1926, at a time when a Chummy cost just £149.
Tom Abernathy constructed a small number of meticulous replicas of the very successful “Brooklands Super Sports” and this car is one such example, built up with a numbered Abernathy frame on a correct 1925 chassis with original London registration number, with correct period fittings including 6 inch brakes.
As the car was intended for VSCC competition, the engine was built up with a Phoenix crankshaft and rods with shell bearings and a self-alligning rear main. A 1925 cylinder head with raised compression and the ‘Petcocks’ blanked off with brass plugs. Ports were polished and a sports three branch exhaust manifold fitted with a ‘Brooklands’ exhaust can and fishtail. A re-built magneto and starter with new ring gear, lightened flywheel, uprated oil pump and Solex 30mm up-draught carburettor complete the reconstruction and have resulted in a strong, powerful and reliable engine.
The three speed gear-box has been fitted with a long second gear (Rolt gearing), and standard gears are included with the car. Gear selection is by a quick action remote gear lever. A standard original type gear leaver and top plate are also included.
An original 1925 date stamped complete spare rear axle casing and torque tube is included with the car.
The body is an exact replica of the 1925 Brooklands Super Sports, finished in polished aluminium over an ash frame , and with very shapely steel wings, leather upholstery, a correct period dashboard and instruments. The car also has period lamps front and rear and aero screens to suit.
The extensive rebild was completed in 2003 and car then commenced a very successful VSCC competition career, being the only Brooklands amongst a shoal of Ulster replicas.
XY5634 is currently fully road legal with V5c VSCC Buff form, an extensive car history archive and manuals are included with the car.
