Allmän beskrivning : A brilliant 840Ci Sport, with full BMW history.

MODEL HISTORY

The BMW 8-series first made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1989. Produced after the E24 6-series the 8 was a completely new coupe in a class of its own, with an increase in performance and a considerably higher price tag.
 

The design and development of the 8-series began in 1986 and reportedly cost BMW over 1.5 billion Deutschemark. The all-new streamline body style was designed using the latest CAD tools computer program, which has since become widely used in the design and development process for many manufacturers. Combined with wind tunnel testing, the 8-series had a drag coefficient of 0.29, a huge improvement from the previous BMW models. The 8-series was also one of BMW's first cars, along with the Z1, to use a multi-link rear axle.
 

Originally there was an 830i prototype which did not reach production. Intended as a potential entry-level model, only eighteen cars were ever produced as the model was dropped in favor of the more powerful 840Ci, and almost all of the 18 cars were dismantled with only one remaining in a BMW museum.
 

The 840Ci was produced with two different engine variants, the first used the 4-litre M60 engine and was produced from mid 1993 to late 1995. From mid-1995, production started with the newer 4.4-litre M62 engine, that returned better fuel economy and more torque despite the brake horsepower output remaining unchanged. The 840 was available with a 5-speed automatic transmission and an optional 6-speed manual transmission for Europe only.

EXTERIOR

Finished in Arctic Silver metallic and equipped with the M Sports suspension and Aerodynamics package, this 840Ci Sport certainly has a commanding presence on the road. The paintwork on the car retains a deep glossy shine and is in superb condition all round.
 

On close inspection the only negatives to be found are a few discreet blemishes to the front end of the car. All of the panels are nice and straight, lining up as they should, with all lenses remaining free from any cracks or moisture.

INTERIOR

The interior of the 840 is awash with black Nappa leather, the perfect contrast to the exterior paintwork. The leather sports seats remain clean, supple, and supportive with only a minimal amount of wear to seat bolsters. The rear seat leather is even less worn suggesting the seats have seen very little use throughout the car's life.
 

The black palette continues to the door cards and along the dashboard, none of which shows signs of age or damage. The centre console housing the switchgear and BMW Business audio system still feels solid, with no wear to any buttons or knobs. The carpets throughout remain clean and tidy.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Under the enormous bonnet you'll find the 4.4-litre V8 powerplant. Delivering 282hp the car reaches 60mph from standstill in just 6.8 seconds. Considering its large size and hefty power output, the M62 engine is surprisingly economical given its 2.81:1 final drive ratio. At 70mph the engine turns over at a lazy 2,200rpm.
 

The engine bay presents remarkably well and is consistent with a car having done half the mileage. Having been well maintained, this example is complete with a full BMW service history. Unsurprisingly the five-speed automatic transmission shifts through the gears with ease.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

This example is equipped with the 17-inch Throwing Star alloys. The three-piece wheels are in good order with no curb marking to the rims.
 

The wheels are shod in a matching set of Bridgestone Potenza tyres, with little wear to speak of. The discs also show plenty of life remaining.

HISTORY FILE

Originally supplied by Coombs BMW of Guildford, this 840Ci was first registered in 1998. Since that time the car has covered a mere 83k miles and received no less than nine services, all undertaken by BMW main dealers. The most recent service was carried out less than 4,000 miles ago by Cooper Tunbridge Wells.
 

Present in the history file is the dealer-supplied service book, which is fully stamped up to 79,383 miles. Present also is the leather document holder, which is complemented by the original BMW owner's manuals. The file is complete with numerous BMW invoices and inspection sheets.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, allmänt känt som BMW, har en rik historia som sträcker sig tillbaka till grundandet 1916.
