Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evolution 1992

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The Lancia Delta was a five-door hatchback designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and released in 1979. It became one of the most successful rally cars ever, having won the World Rally Championship for manufacturers six times between 1987 and 1992. After the abolition of Group B rallying Lancia was forced, as were all other manufacturers, to compete with Group A cars. The 4-wheel drive Delta HF was therefore pressed into service for the 1987 season. Despite some flaws it was more suitable for rallying than its rivals and easily won the 1987 championship.

The Delta's dominance helped it out in the Italian market at least, where a 42% sales increase in the first half of 1987 was directly attributed to its rallying successes. Competitors began to emerge during 1988, in response to whom Lancia produced the Delta Integrale, and then in 1989 the Integrale 16v, which remained competitive until 1991 and netted the team four more world championships. The Integrale Evoluzione was introduced for 1992 and won the championship for a record sixth year in succession. Lancia drivers won the drivers' title in 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1991. The four evolutions of the Delta won 46 world championship events between them, and their run of six successive manufacturers' championships remains a world record.

The first Evoluzione cars were built at the end of 1991 and through 1992. These were to be the final homologation cars for the Lancia Rally Team, as the ‘catalytic’ Evoluzione II was never actually rallied by the factory. The Evoluzione I had a wider track front and rear than earlier Deltas. The boxy wheel arches were extended and became more rounded. The wings were now made in a single pressing. The front strut top mounts were also raised, which necessitated a front strut brace. The new Integrale retained the four-wheel drive layout but the engine was modified to produce 210hp at 5,750 rpm. Further external changes included new grilles in the front bumper to improve the air intake for engine compartment cooling, a redesigned bonnet with new lateral air slats to further assist under-bonnet ventilation, an adjustable roof spoiler above the tailgate, new five-stud wheels with the same design as the rally cars, and a new single exhaust pipe. Internally the Recaro seats were trimmed in grey Alcantara, although options such as full leather and air conditioning were also available.

Equipment
15-inch alloy wheels, Black leather upholstery, Electric sunroof, Electric windows, Momo steering wheel trimmed in Alcantara, Alcantara headlining, Remote central locking, Alarm, Spare wheel, Tool kit, Lancia carpet mats, Spare key.

Exterior

With a timeless design honed from a successful career in rallying, the Integrale looks particularly handsome finished in classic Monza Red. Pleasingly the paintwork retains a glossy finish all over and looks superb throughout the Evo I’s boxy physique. There are few blemishes to report, even on close inspection, and along both sides the car remains nice and straight. All the glass retains the original Lancia etchings and all the badges appear very fresh indeed.

Interior

The comfy sports seats are trimmed in supple black leather, which is free from any notable wear, even to the driver’s bolster. The perforated upholstery retains a nice finish with few wrinkles and absolutely no rips. The rear seats are in particularly fine condition, and in the foot-wells you’ll find a set of tailored Lancia carpet mats. An alcantara-trimmed Momo steering wheel is currently fitted and the car also benefits from the addition of remote central locking.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay presents with a little patina but remains corrosion-free throughout. Aside from a cone filter and the odd silicone hose, there are no signs of any substantial tweaks or upgrades to the engine, thus preserving a nice level of originality. The car was most recently serviced about 1,200 miles ago, and the cambelt was replaced little over 5k miles ago. On test the car performs well; the five-speed ‘box remains feeling tight and precise, and the power delivery is smooth.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Evoluzione’s boxy arches still sport the original 15-inch wheels. The alloys are finished in silver and really look the part having been refurbished to a high standard in recent years; they present without any marking and boast the correct Lancia centre badges. The wheels are shod in a matching set of Bridgestone Potenza tyres with plenty of tread remaining. The pads and discs were replaced all round at 83k miles.

History File

This Italian-supplied Integrale was first registered in 1992. It was imported into the UK in the year 2000 and has now covered 84k miles. The paperwork is complete with a decent UK history file that fully documents the car’s life since that time, including almost every MOT certificate. A raft of specialist invoices details the work undertaken and shows the car to have been regularly maintained despite its relatively limited use over the last 18 years. It was most recently serviced little over 1k miles ago. A Certifcato Di Origine from Lancia Classiche is also present in the history file and confirms the car’s build details.

Akt 2: Innovation i Kärnan (1930-tal-1950-tal)

Akt 3: Efterkrigstidens Elegans (1950-tal-1960-tal)
