Mercedes-Benz 500SL w107 300SL 1989

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The R107 chassis replaced the sought after W113 SL chassis or “Pagoda” in 1972. The R107 was produced in two variants, the SL and SLC, the SL being a two-seater convertible with a soft-top and removable hardtop.

As one of the second longest chassis series that Mercedes produced there are plenty of engine choices and variants to choose from. The 300SL, as featured here, replaced the 280SL in September 1985. In fact, the real benefit for the R107 was the comprehensive updates that were carried out and fitted to post 1985 cars to bring them up to the then modern standards. These included reworked suspension and anti-roll bars resulting in a more controlled ride; larger four-pot front brake calipers increased the cars braking ability. A limited differential was added and quite a few front-end parts were borrowed from the newly introduced W124 series. The front and rear bumpers were also updated along with a hefty amount of body sheet metal changes, then finished with the new door handles from the W126 series, plus a set of light alloy wheels similar to the W201 chassis.

Exterior

The Signal Red paint presents beautifully on this pampered low mileage example and it’s sure to please any Mercedes enthusiast or collector. The paintwork itself is hard to fault with a deep glossy shine all around and only a couple of tiny stone chips to the leading edge of the bonnet and front wings. All of the chrome is immaculate with no discolouration or unsightly marks, the rubber trims around the bumpers are also perfect as all the side trims and other rubber seals; being super critical the rubber seal at the top of the passenger A-pillar has started to perish. All the lights at the front of the car are crystal clear with no signs of moisture ingress or stone chips; the chrome front grille is also perfect as are the chrome window trims. The rear lights are immaculate and again the surrounding chrome is perfect. All in all, it’s everything you could wish for from low mileage 300SL in one of the best colour combinations.

Interior

The beautifully kept original condition continues inside with lovely beige leather seats (not MB Tex) showing only minimal wear consistent with the low mileage. A desirable option on this example is the factory-spec’d air conditioning. The dashboard and centre console are immaculate with no damage to the plastic or wood, the only noticeable imperfection being a tiny chip to the edge of the veneer where the electric door mirror button is located. The steering wheel and gear selector are perfect and still have a lovely texture to the leather, and the carpets are also pristine with no unsightly stains or wear marks. The boot area is immaculate too, with unmarked carpets covering the spare wheel and tools.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Often low mileage cars have had long periods without use but this example has been used sparingly throughout its life and always serviced with 28 entries in the book. She fires into life, idles smoothly, and out on the open road is a true joy to navigate. Opening the bonnet reveals a fantastically maintained engine compartment with perfect paint on the inner wings and front slam panel. All of the engine’s plastic covers and rubber components are pristine and the aluminium and metal components are without oxidisation.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Each of the alloy wheels are in lovely condition with only one small chip to the edge of the driver’s front. All of the matching tyres have over 6mm of tread remaining and out on the road test the SL’s brakes performed exactly as they should, pulling the car up smoothly in a straight line.

History File

This outstanding low mileage R107 comes with the most amazing history file. The original service book contains 28 entries, 24 of these being Mercedes main dealer and the last 4 being either the SL Shop or Hexagon. Incredibly every service invoice and MOT certificate has been kept in the file but the icing on the cake is the original bill of sale. The leather document folder is also present with all of the owner’s manuals and spare keys. The car has had a total of only 4 owners from new.

I automobilhistoriens krönika utvecklas Mercedes-Benzs resa som en berättelse fylld av uppfinningsrikedom från sina grundande pionjärer. År 1886 skapade Karl Benz Benz Patent Motorwagen, en skapelse som skulle gå till historien som världens första bil. Okunnig om detta markerade stunden början på det som skulle utvecklas till den mest ansedda premium-biltillverkaren globalt. Den ekonomiska grundvalen för detta banbrytande företag tillhandahölls intressant nog av Karl Benz fru, Bertha Benz, vilket visade på ett anmärkningsvärt partnerskap som skulle sätta tonen för Mercedes-Benzs arv.

Inte långt därifrån framträdde en parallell berättelse när Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, grundat av Gottlieb Daimler och Wilhelm Maybach, kom in på scenen. År 1901 avslöjade de sin bil under det nu berömda namnet "Mercedes", vilket betyder "guds gåva" på spanska. Detta namn tilldelades bilen på begäran av Emil Jellineks dotter, distributören för Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. Innovationshjulen sattes i rörelse.

Hoppa fram till 1926, ett avgörande år som bevittnade sammanslagningen av Daimler med Benz & Cie., vilket resulterade i födelsen av Daimler-Benz. Från introduktionen av honungskaksradiatorn till flytkarburatorn och den banbrytande implementeringen av fyrhjulsbromsar 1924 pressade Daimler-Benz konsekvent gränserna för bilinnovation. Den dieselkraftade Mercedes-Benz 260 D från 1936 markerade starten för dieselmotorer i personbilar. Den ikoniska Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing gjorde historia som den första bilen med direkt bränsleinsprutning, även om Gutbrods lilla 2-taktsmotor kan göra anspråk på företräde.

Säkerhetsinnovationer blev en kännetecken, med Béla Barényis patenterade säkerhetscell i "Ponton"-modellerna 1951 med främre och bakre deformationszoner. W116 450SEL 6.9 såg införandet av Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), ytterligare en banbrytande säkerhetsfunktion. Från de första serietillverkade krockkuddarna och därefter fortsatte "första" att etsas in i Daimler-Benzs tyg.

Under sin över hundra år långa resa har Mercedes-Benz inte bara producerat bilar utan har skulpterat ikoner. SSKL, 710 SSK Trossi Roadster, 770K Grosser, 540K Spezial Roadster, 300SL Gullwing, w100 600 Pullman, w111 280SE 3.5 Flachkühler, w113 230SL Pagoda, w109 300 SEL 6.3 och w201 2.3-16 Cosworth vittnar om märkets engagemang för ingenjörsexcellens.

De dånande Silver Arrows, eller "Silberpfeile", inklusive W 25, W 125, W154, W165 och W196, skapade ett arv av dominans på racerbanan. Dessa maskiner var inte bara bilar; de var uttryck för precision, hastighet och en oövervinnelig anda som lämnade sina konkurrenter i dammet.

När Mercedes-Benz går in i framtiden gör det inte bara som en biltillverkare utan som en förvaltare av ett arv, en fackelbärare av innovation och en fyr av bilaexcellens. Vägen framåt kommer säkerligen att bevittna den fortsatta föreningen av toppmodern teknik, tidlös design och ett obevekligt åtagande att sätta nya standarder inom bilvärlden.
