Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The 205 GTI had everything when new – sharp handling, light weight for added chuckability, and an unburstable engine that sings the more you rev it.

Ever since the first 1.6-litre 205 GTI went on sale in April 1984, the eulogies to the car have appeared thick and fast. With 105hp on tap from its all-alloy 1580cc four-pot, superb handling, and reasonable build quality, the 205 GTI soon became a favourite with the motoring press and car buyers alike. Sometimes owners got a bit carried away and overcooked it on the bends, sometimes those who pranged the car had ‘borrowed' it without asking, but everyone who drove it reckoned the little Pug was one of the best drives available, at any money.

In 1985 Peugeot's barking mad 205 T16 rally car won the World Rally Championship, and in 1986 the convertible 205 GTI went on sale, neatly badged the CTI. Peugeot were on the crest of a wave with their small hatch.

Things got even more fun – and more easily out of shape – when the 1.9-litre car arrived in January 1987 with 130hp and disc brakes all round. So that it wasn't overshadowed by its bigger brother, tweaks to the cylinder head and camshaft in 1987 meant power for the 1.6-litre car rose to 115hp.

However, in 1992 new legislation meant that catalytic converters had to be fitted to all cars, which lowered the power output to 122bhp on the 1.9 GTI. At the same time anti-lock brakes and air conditioning became an option. The 1.6 205 GTI bit the dust in August 1991, while its bigger brother lasted until April 1994 when the 205 range was replaced with the rather sedate and uninvolving 206.

Exterior

This brilliant 1.9 GTI has led a pampered life since new and still remains in outstanding condition. Other than a few very light stone chips to front end the paintwork is in excellent order throughout, with a remarkable depth of shine to every panel – our studio photos really don’t do it justice. What really sets this car apart from the rest is all the pristine plastic and rubber trims, which are commonly prone to damage and fading; everything appears in close to new condition, including the red GTI detailing. The registration number can even still be found etched into the glass.

Interior

The interior of this 64k mile example is second to none, the front seats having been professionally re-trimmed to an exceptionally high standard. The finish is to factory specification and really gives the impression of being sat inside a brand new 205. The black leather bolsters are supple, unworn, and contrasted by the correct red stitching; the textured cloth centres are also pristine with absolutely no signs of any wear to speak of. Commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gearknob retain a great shine-free appearance, and the plastics throughout are immaculate. The switchgear still feels solid to operate and in the footwells you’ll find an unmarked set of tailored overmats. The vacuum-operated sunroof works exactly as it should.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This non-PAS example remains in excellent mechanical fettle and boasts the most amazing service history; 26 services having been carried out since new, 14 of which by the supplying dealer. The most recent service was done in March 2020 and the timing belt was last changed in 2018. The car’s treasured lifestyle and low mileage of 64k is accurately represented by the condition of the engine bay; there are no signs of corrosion to the inner panels, with no unsightly deterioration to any of the plastics, rubbers or soundproofing.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The original 15-inch Speedlines are in amazing condition with only the tiniest hint of marking to be found on very close inspection – certainly nothing worthy of a refurb. The alloys are wrapped in a matching set of Dunlop Sport tyres with very little wear to report. Out on the road the brakes confidently stop the car in a straight line; the rear pads and back plates have only recently been replaced.

History File

This four-owner 1.9 GTI was first registered in January 1990. It was supplied new by Research Garage (Hinckley) Ltd. The low mileage of 64k is fully verified by an extensive service history, which comprises of a fully stamped service booklet and stack of maintenance invoices. A raft of MOT certificates and the original Peugeot book pack complete the paperwork.

The service history accompanying the 205 is one of the best we’ve seen. The book is stamped with entries at the following mileages: 1k, 3k, 6k, 9k, 12k, 15k, 18k, 21k, 25k, 28k, 31k, 37k, 43k, 46k, 48k, 50k, 52k, 54k, 56k, 57k, 58k, 58k, and 59k - 14 of these were carried out by the supplying dealer. Three further services have been carried out since the last stamp, most recently in March 2020. The timing belt was last changed in 2018 at 62k miles, and the MOT is valid until January 2021.
