Bentley 4.25 Litre Derby 4 1/4 Sedanca de Ville By Baker '38 1938

General description : Imported from UK before Brexit The Bentley Derby (or Derby Bentley) was the first car produced after the company was bought by Rolls Royce in 1931, two years before the death of Henry Royce who died (1863 – 1933). The name Derby comes from the city of Derby (between Birmingham and Manchester) where Rolls Royce had a factory. It was built in two series: from A to F, it was equipped with a 3.5-liter engine, from G to L, the displacement increased to 4.5 liters. As almost always at the time, luxury cars were dressed by different prestigious coachbuilders: Vanden Plas, Mulliner, Saoutchik, Figoni and Falaschi, and of course by Barker. Bentley supplied the chassis, gearbox, and radiator. The coachbuilder Barker was already renowned in the18th century where he made trolleys. He began dressing automobiles in the early twentieth century. But the company struggled to keep up with the significant progress of the automobile during the 20s and 30s, and it was taken over in 1938 by the coachbuilder Hooper who was in turn bought by Daimler in 1940. Specifications Wheelbase : 320 cm/126 in Engine : straight 6 4256 cc/260 cu in, front-mounted 12 valves 2 SU carburettors 4-speed manual Rear-wheel drive Right-hand drive Maximum power : 130 hp

About Bentley
Before becoming a mere subsidiary to Rolls-Royce, Bentley was an independent Automaker famous for the "fastest lorries in the world" e.i Bentley 4½ Litre.

Good ol' Bentley boys (A group of wealthy British motorists, mainly Woolf Barnato, Sir Henry "Tim" Birkin, steeplechaser George Duller, aviator Glen Kidston, S.C.H. "Sammy" Davis, and Dr Dudley Benjafield ) -in their trusty Bentley cars- took four consecutive victories at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930

In 1931 Bentley was taken over British Central Equitable Trust that later proved to be a front for Rolls-Royce Limited. Unhappy with his role at Rolls-Royce, W.O. Bentley left the company when his contract expired in 1935 duly joining Lagonda. This was beginning of which ultimately led Bentley cars to become more or less badge-engineered Rolls-Royce.
