Eind jaren 60 ontwikkelt BMW Motorsport op basis van de succesvolle 1600-2 de BMW 2002 turbo. Het is de eerste productieauto voorzien van een turbo, nog voor de 911 Turbo. Het model is speciaal voor de toerwagenracerij gebouwd, in 1973 komt er ook een straatversie. Deze levert 170 pk, waarmee de BMW 2002 turbo in 6,9 tellen naar 100 km/h snelt en een top van 211 km/h haalt. Dat zijn begin jaren 70 fantastische cijfers voor een compacte sedan. Helaas is het benzineverbruik eveneens van sportwagenniveau. En laat in 1973 nu ook de oliecrisis uitbreken, met enorme prijsverhogingen aan de pomp tot gevolg. De dorstige 2002 turbo met ‘oorlogsstrepen’ krijgt het stempel ‘politiek incorrect’ en wordt al na ruim een jaar uit productie genomen. De productie bleef daarom beperkt tot 1476 stuks waarvan de meeste in wit. Tel daar bij op dat auto's uit die periode standaard nogal roestgevoelig waren en de techniek van een 2002 Turbo na lang stilstaan veel aandacht kan behoeven. Logisch dat een harde, roestvrije en ongelaste carrosserie in combinatie met recent uitgevoerd zeer groot technisch onderhoud een zeldzaamheid is die de liefhebber c.q. verzamelaar op waarde weet te schatten. Het hier aangeboden exemplaar is een zeer originele Turbo, zo is bijvoorbeeld de bodem van de auto onaangeraakt en zichtbaar roestvrij, net zoals de gehele carrosserie. Uiteraard betreft het een altijd schadevrij gebleven auto. Afkomstig uit een BMW collectie waar de auto lang onderdeel van was bleek de auto technisch inderdaad geen grote gebreken te vertonen echter groot onderhoud bleek noodzakelijk. Zo is bijvoorbeeld de originele turbo gereviseerd door een specialist, zijn de radiator, alle droge rubbers, pakkingen, filters, vloeistoffen, remleidingen, etc. etc. vernieuwd en werden optisch belangrijke details zoals bijvoorbeeld de verweerde stickers vernieuwd. Dit alles met gevoel voor authenticiteit en respect voor de originaliteit die deze 2002 Turbo zo bijzonder maakt. Optisch een ware 'tijdmachine', dus geen over-gerestaureerde 'nieuw' lijkende auto, deze 2002 neemt u mee terug in de tijd zonder dat u zich stoort aan een optisch defect. Ze rijdt overigens als een nieuw exemplaar, dat dan weer wel.Bij de auto is aanwezig een overzicht van eigenaren (slechts drie in totaal, de eerste kocht de auto op 41 jarige leeftijd) en een uitgebreide lijst en facturen van het recent uitgevoerde werk.
