BMW 325 325i Convertible 1986

General description : Model History

Replacing the E21 chassis in 1982 the E30 chassis spanned twelve years of production and overlapped its successor – the E36 introduced in 1990 – by 4 years.

Early models featured the four-pot M10 and straight-six M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 engine replaced with the M40 engine again utilising Motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black ones in late 89 and the rear light made slightly bigger during this minor face lift.

The E30 was credited with a spacious cabin and a light curb weight, this was due to the suspension design that utilize Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first 3 series to receive a service light indicator and warning light.

The 325i convertible was the first drop top solely built by BMW closely followed by the 320i convertible. The early E30 convertibles were converted by Baur, a coachbuilder located in Stuttgart credited with early full factory authorization. To strengthen the chassis and reduce scuttle shake BMW added plates to the front suspension turrets and built-in chassis beams down the length of the car helping to reduce flex or twist in the chassis after removing the metal roof.

Exterior

This ultra-low mileage 325i looks great in Diamond Black, a seemingly rare colour for the E30 convertible. The dark metallic paintwork presents well throughout with no unsightly scratches or scuffs to report. There are no signs of rust in any of the common E30 weak spots and the underside is also amazingly fresh having never seen a salted road. Both bumpers are in excellent condition with the chrome and rubber trims still retaining a great factory finish, and the hood presents perfectly having only recently been replaced with a new OEM-quality item.

Interior

The E30’s cabin is a wonderful place to be with the body-hugging sports seats and rare factory-spec’d air conditioning system. The anthracite upholstery has really stood the test of time and presents exceptionally well throughout with no major wear to the bolsters or seat bases. Houndstooth cloth extends to the door cards, again all unmarked. Glancing across the dash there are no cracks to report, with other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gear lever also appearing in great shape. Everything works just as it should, including the AC which has just been re-gassed.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The smooth 2.5-litre straight six starts first turn of the key and idles up to temperature without fuss. The engine performs really well on test and the switchable 4-speed ‘box shifts with ease. Under the bonnet you’ll find a very clean and tidy engine bay with no signs of any damage or previous poor repair. The car has just returned from the workshop following a full mechanical inspection and fresh service. The cambelt was replaced in February 2021.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The E30 sits on the desirable 15-inch cross-spoke BBS alloy wheels, all in perfect unmarked condition having only recently been refurbished to a very high standard, including the spare. They are wrapped in brand new tyres all round. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a halt quickly and in a straight line.

History File

This attractive E30 325i in gleaming Diamantschwarz Metallic was first registered in March 1987. Supplied new by Hexagon BMW, the car was factory-specified with a KM instrument cluster and air conditioning. It was then exported to Brunei where it would live a sheltered life before returning to the UK in late 2019. The V5C shows only 1 former keeper.

Since arriving with us the car has been fully inspected by our trusted classic car workshop. A few small items were reported on inspection and have now been rectified. This work included the fitting of a new battery and retaining clamp, new bonnet strut, a pressure test and re-gas of the air conditioning system, new front shock absorbers, and new front lower suspension arms including rear bushes. A fresh service was also carried out for the new keeper’s peace of mind. Other notable recent work includes a cambelt replacement done in February 2021.

Within the accompanying History File you’ll find the original document pack with the owner’s manuals, Blaupunkt radio instructions, and stamped maintenance booklet still inside. The paperwork is complete with a number of recent invoices, MOT certificates, various import documents, and a spare key.

About BMW

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
