BMW 325 318is 1999

General description : Model History

The E36 3-Series was sold from 1991 to 1999. It was the successor to the E30 and was replaced by the E46 3-Series in 1998. This third generation of 3-Series was a very popular one. Its new design featured improved aerodynamics and featured the “Z-axle” multilink rear suspension, which had been proven in the Z1.

Although larger and heavier than the E30 – due to more active safety features being fitted – The E36 boasted a perfect 50:50 weight distribution; this was achieved by relocating the engine further back. The 318iS, as featured here, was equipped with BMW’s venerable M44 engine that was more powerful and sporting than that of the standard 318i. The 318i featured a 1796cc 8v unit producing 115hp, whereas the 16v 1896cc engine of the 318iS produced circa 140hp making it very zippy indeed.

Equipment

Cosmos Black Metallic paintwork, Anthracite half-leather sports seats, M Sports Package, M-Tech rear spoiler with integrated brake light, 5-speed manual transmission, 16-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, Air conditioning, Analogue dash clock, CD player, Power steering, ASC, Front fog lights, BMW alarm system, Original BMW overmats, Unopened BMW first aid kit, BMW toolkit, Warning triangle, Spare keys.

Exterior

This lovely E36 318is has been in the hands of just one careful owner from new, clocking up a very modest 55k miles during that time. The paintwork presents extremely well with a deep glossy shine to the Cosmo Black Metallic; most of the paint appears to be original and so there are a few small chips and imperfections in-line with the mileage. The car is of course accident-free and looking down both sides it’s nice and straight, free from any significant parking dents or scratches. Looking around the car all of the plastic door mouldings and bumper trims remain in excellent condition, the only real negative being some perishing to the window rubber corners around the bottom of the rear screen and where the rear windows open. The windscreen is excellent and free of any stone chips, as are the front and rear lights.

Interior

The interior remains in lovely condition - the car’s single owner and low mileage are clearly evident. The seat bolsters remain in fine order with only a very small amount of wear to the edge of the driver’s seat worthy of note; the fabric centres are all immaculate and the rear seats are without any sign of wear. The door cards and dashboard are all immaculate and without any damage or scratches, and everything works as it should including the air conditioning which has just been re-gassed. The headlining is also perfect, as are the carpets which are still protected by the original BMW overmats. The steering wheel and handbrake lever are also pristine, still retaining a nice textured leather finish. In recent years the gearknob was replaced as the M badge had started to delaminate.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Opening the bonnet reveals an extremely tidy engine compartment with all of the metalwork to the inner wings and slam panel remaining original. All of the plastic trims and covers are in excellent condition and the engine is still protected with its coat of original BMW lacquer and so has stood the test of time extremely well.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

All of the alloys are in pristine condition, free from any curb marks or scratches. The tyres are all fairly recent with the majority of the tread still remaining. The car has just come back from a local specialist and on the inspection it was noted that all the brakes were in fine condition too.

History File

This one owner example comes with an excellent history file. The original BMW service book has 9 entries with the last service completed in May 2022 by our local classic car specialist. The file also contains all of the invoices from when the car was new, including the original bill of sale, and to further verify the low mileage every MOT certificate is also included. The original BMW document holder is also present along with all of the owners manuals and three sets of keys.

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
